I spent some time on the Columbia this weekend, scouting for 4th of July camp sites, preferably in an area where fiish were moving through. Didn't see anybody with summer chinook yet, although a couple boats had superb reports just inside the mouth of the Willametter. Based on where summers are headed, I'm thinking these must still be springers.
The really bad news is that the river is SO high, there are virtually no exposed sandy beaches. All of the places I've camped the last few years on Govt Isle and across from Kelly point are now way underwater. Some beaches still are exposed, but most of them are already staked out. I'm not about to deal with the insanity of launching and pulling the boat with the big 4th of July crowds for the firework show, and if camping isn't a realistic option, I may have to part with tradition and go somewhere else. Anybody got some alternative suggestions? The NOAA forcast looks pretty friendly for the ocean beginning tomorrow, so I'm considering Newport or Nahelem as the chinook are out there.
Thanks!
