Ah, one of my most favorite haunts....and also one of the more controversial!!! I believe we start up arguements daily during the fall on how the fishery is conducted.

The majority of the people plunk plain 'ol corkies, sometimes with a chunk of yarn, with or without scent. Yep, the yokels snag quite a few fish. Lot's of "drive by shootings" (line bumps). You can usually tell right off the bat who NOT to associate with, because the first 1 minute of the morning starts out with: cast, jerk, "Darn, I missed him", cast, jerk "Darn, I missed him".....etc. These fish will REGULARLY bite the plunked corkie set up, if they get a chance to!! If you've done much fishing, you can easily tell the difference between a line bump, swim through, or a bite. In my experience, the bite is often like a trout bite, just a tap tap. A steady pull, or a rod-burying yank, is not a bite, almost guaranteed!!

The first fish I ever caught at the blackberry hole (just above 101) was August 28, but I've heard of them caught by Aug 1st.

Another good way to catch them in the Salmon by 101 is throwing Alvins if there is room. Evenings have seemed to be the best that I have seen. I dont fish it much but stop by there on our way home from the Nestuc just to watch alot.

Rouge,
I agree it's a good way to catch fish. Some people abuse it by snagging, I like it a lot, and you're right it's pretty easy to tell a bite from a drive by. The biggest Nook I ever caught was with same technique, except w/ a Sand Shrimp tail added. Got it in the Trask Tidewater 46#. It can be deadly, or abused, fish w/ ethics, don' snag!!

if i see people keep foul hooked fish i will tell them that is illegal and they need to release the fish immediatly. if they threaten you, leave and call the cops. most of the time on the salmon you are fishing so close to each other that it is hard for them to get away with it without taking a bunch of heat. but most of the guys down there are good people and i dont see alot of illegal activities happening. good luck. also bobber and eggs work good too besides corky and yarn.

I fished the Salmon last year for the time i caught 3 jacks and one 22 lb the locals did not like that much i got some really weird looks. I was useing bobber and Ammerman eggs everyone else was using spinners and corkies.

Hey, it there's room to fish how you would like to, go for it!!! Just don't wade into the middle of a bunch of corkie fisherman and start flinging over their heads.

I've seen many fish caught on bobber eggs/shrimp...generall at high slack. I personally believe that this is because the fish are suspending at that point in time, and the bait doesn't have to be on the bottom. If it's on the bottom, it will get eaten by pogies....there's got to be more pogies-per-foot in this tidewater than anywhere in the world!!!

As for the snagged fish, as F.I.L. says, it's such tight quarters that I haven't seen a snagged fish kept in years...people would likely throw someone in the water if they tried to do it.
