As I live on the upper Nehalem river, I want a chance to fish for these fine finned summer run fish before they get up as far as I am located. Bait restrictions, barbed/unbarbed, finclips? I think that none of the chinook are clipped so do fall regulations apply? I plan on fishing the bay as I did for fall fish last year. I "hear" that the run is at its best after July 4 thru the first week in August. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

fishuntr2 I have been fishing there for about 15 years or so. The regs are same as the spring salmon and after aug. 1st it goes to fall regs. none of the salmon are fin cliped look in oregon regs. book. It says 2 fish a day 2 for the week and goes to 2 a day 4 in a week after Aug. 1st . Tillamook bay is the same I think. We start to fish it July 15 to Nov 1st. I have found there are fish in there in good numbers to fish for that time from mid summer to end of fall.

Ok, I'm looking at the regs and it doesn't state 2 fish a day, 2 a week. It does state that after Aug. 1 it is 2 fish a day, 4 fish in any 7 consecutive days and 10 fish total for the season. I can only see spring salmon open April 1 - July 31. I would then assume that for this period the limit is 2 per day with all unclipped fish entered on the normal 20 fish tag. So am I not seeing the right regs for this bay? I definitely don't want to screw up!
Thanx for any and all responses.

I would agree Bob. If you compare Nehalem Bay Spring Chinook regs to Tillamook Bay and Nestucca Bay regs, it clear states "fin-clipped" in Tillamook and Nestucca from 4/1-7/31 and doesn't in Nehalem from 4/1-7/31. I would tag 2 finned fish a day in Nehalem bay on my normal harvest tag. The way I read it, for the fall starting 8/1, you can't go over 10 for the three bays in aggregate, but you could keep 10 springers and 10 fall fish (sperate defined seasons).
My take on it.

fishuntr2 heres a number to call its Jim Neilson at Wheeler Marina 503-368-5780. If hes not open yet try to call 1st of july he works as a carpenter in the off season. All the salmon in Nehalem are native but the coho are clipped.

Spinnermaker, Thanx. I know the coho in Nehalem Bay are majorly unclipped!! Last fall we caught many silvers and couldn't keep any. We did manage to boat some nice fall chinook, in fact one of my fishing buddys caught his first salmon there, a nice coho that he released then a real nice king the same day. I just want to target this "summer" run of chinook and am hoping that those pesky coho won't even be around!

fishuntr2 the coho are in there in aug. but not to many if you go in july your safe . There might be a handfull but most are on the bar feeding . By the way what do you use if you use sippners like me you won't get as many coho more chinook.

Spinnermaker, Are you the one I met a few years ago there while you and your Dad were fishing? We were camped in one of the back spots behind the clubhouse at Paradise Cove.
Email me if you would, I'd like to talk to you about your spinners. I remember they were very effective. Thanks Joe
