View Full Version : Trout Fishing with Small Fry
Attended my first ODFW Childrens Free fishing
weekend event.
It was a good trip, myself, 6 adults and 6 children made our way down to the small fry pond at Promontory Park. While none of the children was able to set there own hook, each child did get the opportunity to feel a respectable trout on ultra light gear. After each child caught there limit, the adults attempted to get thiers in the adjoining North Fork Reservior.
I'm sad to say that a thunderstorm with hail stones moved in and smashed all our hopes of catching a single fish.
Through it all, the happiness on the childrens faces when they caught their fist fish was worth it.

It's a blast isn't it? I took my 5 year old daughter kokanee fishing at Detroit last week, and she had fun. It's amazing how everything is a momentous event at that age. While I was trying to locate the fish, she was sort of bummed out, saying we weren't going to catch anything, then after half an hour of asking to go back, because she was tired, she was cold, we weren't going to catch anything, she was bored, and on and on and on.... Fish on! "'Daddy! Daddy! I've got a fish! I've got a fish! I've got a fish! We have to reel it in! We have to reel it in! Oh! Oh! I want that fishie!" We brought in a six inch kokanee. "I'm sorry Eileen, but this one is too small. We have to throw it back." "WHAT? We can't do that! Why do we have to throw it back?" "Because that's the law." "Who made a dumb law like that?" "The government." "Well, then they're stupid." Five years old, and already she's questioning the government! I must be doing something right! I hooked a very nice kokanee, which she wanted to net. So I gave her the net..... She made a good effort, but.... it got away. She didn't care about that one, though. It wasn't her fish. She was extremely happy as we headed back that night. She was soooo proud to have caught fish with her Daddy. It went in the blink of an eye from something boring and miserable, to something grand and momentous. And all it took was a six inch kokanee to start off the excitement.

My 2 1/2 year old has fished with me several times. Last time out was the most memorable yet. We anchored for shad. She couldn't decide whether she wanted to review her Pooh books or hold the net. When the rod started dancing, she almost knocked me down to get to it first, even though she can't manage the reel yet. That was three weeks ago, but this morning on the way to day care, she said, "Daddy, I wanna go in the boat and get fishies with my green net and put them in the box!" Then she came up with a question I need help with. She asked, "Daddy, do fishies talk very well?"
Well, shad aren't trout, but she's a small fry.
Welcome to Ifish, lor.

Many of the NW Steelheaders members showed up at Hagg Lake with boats to take kids out fishing. It was fast paced fun. We got some rain too, but, the sun kept coming back out. The emotions those kids show from catching their first fish ever or being in a boat for the first time is something special. Fortuanantly the fish were biting and just about everyone got fish.
This was a rather educational experience for me. Kind of reminds you how good life is for most of us. I will be there next year too.

I think it's great to hear stories about people taking their kids fishing. I have three young boys and they love to catch fish ( they don't like fishing that much, if you know what I mean).
A friend and I took our kids (4 total) shad fishing down by OC and had a blast. My 8 year old was the only one that could real it in all by himself. When the others got tired, we started handing him all the poles. The fishing was so good, he actually got wore out.
37 shad in 5 1/2 hours.
That was a blast!

I took my youngest son's Webelos out to Trillium Lake on Saturday. We dodged snow flurries, drizzle, rain and sun flecks. We clipped a lot of hooks for undersized fish but did get three keepers (bigger than 8"). Pautzkie's Green Label seemed to do it. Almost a bite every cast. The only thing that slowed us down was the fact that 90% of the time, the line is not in the water. Fishing with kids - any age, hectic but fun.
My understanding is that the campground will open this week. With warmer weather, this is a great spot for family fishing and picnicing. Picnic tables along the shore - beautiful setting. Good fishing. $3.00 day use but I believe Northwest Forest Passes are valid instead of the day use fee.
