I went to Oregon City today and caught numerous shad. I tried using a diver and small spoon. We caught several and my dad even hooked a steelhead which we did not land. I was a great day.
After spending the day there I have a couple of questions for you all:
1) where in the heck did all those boats come from? I did not know there were that many registered In Oregon.
2) can we all get together and meet with ODFW to see of there is a chance of holding a hunting season on jet skis? How far do you have to lead one of those anyway?
3) Why do most everyone have to go full speed though all of the anchored boats...
I did notice one boat taking it slow and being decent to ppl. It was the old red sled... Cudos
I did have a great time,, I just ignored most everyone. The shad was kinda hot today...

1-Actually there are NOT that many boats registered in Oregon. They import most of them from back east, where everyone is real polite. The Bronx I beleive.
2- Lead the J.S. anywhere from 5 17 feet depending on conditions. You want to be accurate when you shoot because if you hit one in the air cleaner it will go a great distance before stopping. And we certianly don't wan't to see a jet ski suffer needlessly do we?If we hit a jet ski poorly, a finishing shot is required. At this point you have no choich but to shoot for the carb.Desperate times call for desperate measures. If we do not shoot them in the carb quickly, the PETA folks will certianly drag us thru the mud. And as a proud jet ski hunter I don't want that to happen.I want to protect my heritage.
3- Because it's faster than going slow. And fast is cool.Don't you go fast?I sure do since I had Willie install those new zinc oars on the drifter.
It's nice to hear that someone has finally decided to be nice to Pacific Power and Light. Those poor companies really got a bad rap out of that price fixing/Enron deal.Just warms my heart to hear it.After all where would we be without the Pacific? All of our ocean going fish go to the Pacific.Need power for the 'puter. And light so we can make coffee before a big fishin trip.If it was dark all the time it would be really tough to not get coffee everywhere, and my wife would be very mad if I made coffee spilled it on the counter and went fishing before I cleaned it up because I had NO IDEA there was coffee on the counter because it was dark.
The trick to having a good time is to ignore everyone. The best way to do this is to catch a bunch o shad(4.6538 bushel to the bunch).
See you on the rivers.
Mark.

517 feet,,, dang thats why i missed,, I was leading at 527 feet,,, gotta check my math.
Yes I do like to go fast,, because if I dont my sled will hit the rocks,, and thats a bad thing,,
thanks for the reply,, I laughed outloud till it hurt.

hey K9, I was out there amongst the herd too.
1)- Did you see that schooner weave its way through all those boats/ Somebody give that guy a navigation award!
2)-The jetskis were moving fairly slow when cruisin by me ,.....must have been that warning shot you fired across their bow
3)-Those fast movin boats are the ones trying to dodge all the 8 ounce lead everyone is hurlin at them when they race by!
I had a good time too, just stayed with chinook gear though . The boat next to me scored and one on the bank is all I saw . Looks to be slowing down a bit .

Personally, I prefer a shotgun on the jetskis. They're usually close enough, and the pattern ( I like #2 shot) ensures a clean, merciful kill.
As to the boats zooming through, I find a that a half full beer tossed over the side at the appropriate time, with sufficient loft, generally ensures that they pick the other side of the river the next time. I just explain that I didn't see them and was just getting rid of an empty. Since I'm holding the jetski shotgun, I don't usually get much static.
YMMV

Looks like all of ya need a good ol jetski soakin. Yea you could probably turn you motors up and do the same thing. But you got to catch me first. lol Sounds like you got just as much trouble with the boats as you do with the jet skiers. so it don't sound like you got much to wine about. well tight lines.

If you have a pump on your boat, keep the engine idling and the trim way up high. If you time it right, you can knock the idiot off of his PWC with a blast from your pump when he tries to ride behind you.
In fact, with enough boats, the river would look like the fountain show outside the Belagio in Vegas whenever a jet skier rides by! We could even make odds and take bets on how far they get before getting knocked off. Then all we need are bikini-clad cocktail waitresses in little boats bringing us free drinks, and who would need to go to Vegas!?!

You guys are bad! How far do I have to lead a jet skier with my pump AKA "Squirt gun"?
I have vectored out to about 75' at about 75 gallons/second, but still need to factor for windage and ski velocity.
Saw lots of boats out for shad yesterday as I looked out the back yard, but this morning there were only two early on (before work). Saw one chinook caught yesterday and lots of shad.
They are still out there!

I too was in the area you speak of but I must say that I don't know what is worse, bouncing in the wake or listening to classless people scream profanities at the top of their lungs! There were alot of boats out there yesterday, and in at least 60% of those boats were little kids and their families who were exposed to some language that they don't need to be exposed to. Where is the happy medium here...I don't know...but some people need to think about their surroundings no matter how righteous they think they are being.

There was a guy anchored next to us who had his kids out shad fishing and he was plunked for chinook. He hooked one on an alvin.. it scared the tar out of him. He lost it after a quick run our two.
I will have to admit, after he hooked one , my shad pole went into the rack and I plunked for chinook for a couple hours.
Can somone figure out what range my 115 merc with a jet will have on a seadoo. Im going out again on thursday with the kids and am going to let them catch shad before I settle in for steehead and trout the reminder of the summer.
