Heading to Astoria for sturgeon on saturday and I've got a couple of questions regarding the shallow sand bars. First, are they located entirely below the bridge or are there some above? Second, what advice would you give a first timer trying to navigate them? Thanks for any and all help.

We do not fish much above the brigde but I think the sand flats go all the way up past it. My best suggestion is go get a river topo map and use your depthfinder. The edges are great places to fish and during the right tide there are some troughs that hold fish. Be very careful cutting across (especially with a prop motor). It is a long trip around but much safer. If you choose to fish on top or in shallow edges, be very careful, it changes extremely fast. When the tide change pushes up river it can come in a flash and can be very rough (big rough breaking waves). Out going at times just rips and the wind can make it tough also. When we started down there we got a map and started around the edges until we learned the area.
Good luck.

Below to the marker and above for quite a ways, if unsure, go around unless its high water. Get the Columbia Fishermans Map, FMS or Bob's in Longview (they will mail), great map. Fish Youngs Bay or the edges of the sand just below the bridge on the ebb. Watch the wind and the tides..... Be safe and have fun
