Need some info for this weekend. Which is the better drift? To Jefferson on the Santiam for springers or the Town drift for summer steelies on the Siletz. I've never fished the Willamette Valley during the spring time so any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hey fishguy, right now the town drift on the Siletz is a tough one because water level is low. Best drifted at 4.5ft and above. Way to much dead water, boat scrapes. The fishing would be much better on the Santiams. Sorry for the bummer info. I would like to make the Siletz drift too.

Cully,
Thanks for the info, just looked at the weather report and rain is not in the forcast so it looks like the Siletz is out of the question. Where is a good put in place for the float to Jefferson and how difficult is the float?

fishguy, I have never done that drift but have been told by lots of folks that it rivals the town drift as one of the easiest to do especially for a beginer. Where to put in? If I remember from what I've been told, is to go over the bridge at Jefferson and take the first right and start looking for the put in. I hope someone can correct me if i'm wrong.

Put in for a long drift is at shelburn (not for beginners) or for a normal drift, greens bridge. Greens to Jefferson is an easy drift, but you have to be careful on any run...

Greenes bridges is where you want to put in. To get there turn right after you cross the bridge in Jefferson, the turn is across the road from the store. Follw the rooad out until you cross another bridge. Just after the bridge there is a raod to the right, turn on it and immediatly turn right onto the gravel raod that runs along side the paved raod. The put in is there just below the bridge.
The North Santiam iis running a little high at the moment. It is still very fishable. With the #'s of fish going over Willamette falls you should get on some.

I agree with willierower.

I assume this puts you in the North System , right ?
How long is the drift ( mile wise or time wise), and what types of water am I looking at ? D & b, plugs, drift fishing, bobbers ? Am I getting close ?
How about crowds ? Are there many, and can this stretch handle a few people?
How about shuttles ?
Thanks for any input,
Chris

CnD,
I went from Pleasant Valley to Waterloo last moonday and it took 12 hours. We blew through the last 3rd of the float. There is way too much frog water on that stretch for my taste.

I agree. With the exception of one or two springer holes, I'm not a big fan of that last portion (Jack's to Waterloo). If it took you 12 hours to go from Pleasant Valley to Waterloo, William must have had quite a float with the 4 extra miles from Wiley.

How long does that drift take you!? That has got to be at least 15 miles.

He is probally still on the river
One of these days soon Im going from Gills landing to Jefferson. With steelhead #'s what they are that could be a very productive drift. A guy would have to side drift the whole way in order to make it in one day.
Ive been from Gills to Jefferson and back in a sled. We burned 25 gallons of fuel on that run, made it back to the ramp running on fumes. It was dark when we made it back and I was getting a little nervous.
