I took my oldest kid out to Green Peter Reservoir this morning to fish for kokanee. We only got two. It seemed like we should have been taking more of them, because we got our first two in our first ten minutes of trolling. I think we ended up trolling below the fish. I only marked an occasional fish between 25 and 30 feet, and that's where we hooked up our two. But then we got nothing else for the next few hours. When we packed it in and started to head home, we stopped by the dam. The dam was a good windbreak, and the water was still. There were fish coming up to the surface, and we threw our lines in, casting spinners and spoons for about half an hour. We could see fish following our lures in, sometimes quite a few of them behind the same lure, but no takers. One guy fishing at the dam had quite a few kokanee. The kokanee were probably too shallow to show up on the fish finder. We probably should have been trolling at around ten feet or less, instead of 25-30. Oh, well. Next time I'm not marking fish I'll have to remember that.
My son sure got a kick out of the way the kokanee go nuts right at the boat! We had one that just wouldn't go into the net, the finally jumped into it.

I fish a lake called Riffe lake on white pass.its loaded with kokanee. the ticket there is long line no weight with the troll lite lake troll a rubber snubber and a wedding ring, put a cooked bay shrimp on in a circle covering all three points of your treble hook and tip each with white corn. troll with your elect. motor that way you won't part the school as much. what i found is as you troll the school parts showing nothing on your fish finder as you pull away they come back together about the time your troll goes thru and wham fish on, not more than 3-5 feet down. however at lake roosevelt the kokane are right on top at first light than shortly there after down 100+ feet, downrigger time
there's a penny's worth,

I found so far this year many fish are right at the surface. Two different times this year I have not marked any fish on the finder but have caught them by fishing in the top 10 feet of water. I still use my downrigger but let out about 50 feet of line and drop it down 5 to 10 feet. Bumper-Chrome has it right about the fish parting around the boat which accounts for not marking the fish. This past weekend at Odell I trolled some with a dodger/spinner long-linning with out weight. I figure I was fishing about 1 foot under the water. This setup was catching fish in the middle of the day.

When the kokes are on the surface try casting and retreiving a buzzbomb. As you reel in give the rod a jigging action. Of course put white corn on your hook, doesn't take much, just one kernel on each of the hooks, if you use the factory trebles. A long Tru-turn #4 fine wire works well also, put on more corn though.
2" or 2-1/2" pink or orange were the ticket at Odell last weekend. The fish weren't taking the trollers, but were hitting the jigs at the surface
