Head over to Download.com (http://www.download.com) and do a search for Irfanview. It is an excellent (and relatively small) image viewer and converter for the Windows platform that is free and pretty easy to use.

Once you install it simply double-click on your image that you want to make into an Avatar and it should open in Irfanview. And then if you go to the toolbar on top of the window and click Image-->Resize/Resample you will be presented with a bunch of options. Make sure that neither the horizontal or the vertical measurements are greater than 48 pixels and that the DPI is no greater than 72 DPI. Click Okay when done.

Go to File-->Save As and then save your Avatar. Follow Jennie's instructions (http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012345) on how to upload it and you're set!

This way your Avatar will be MUCH smaller and it won't take those who are on modems forever to download them.

Jennie, if this doesn't belong here then go ahead and relocate it as necessary.
