chinook_hunter,
Head up river from the fishery. Just above the island on the Washington side you will see boats fishing for shad. Most were fishing in 8-14 feet of water. Chartruse/white or red/white dick nite behind a hot n tot or jet diver worked for us. Could also use 3 oz of lead on a 2 foot dropper in place of the diver.

The Coquuille is picking up. We got a few the other night. 1/8oz jig head with red and white tube jigs were the hot thing. Red/white and chrome/red dick nite #1 spoons have also been working.

They're in pretty thick at Coon Isle. I took 35 last Sunday and one chinook. 15-18 feet of water and gold/chartruse dick nites was the ticket.

Does any one recall when and where the shad run is on the rogue or Umqua? Recall reading last year something about yellow Jacket park or something -good for flyfishing.
Anybody going out this week and need a mate I will be glad to pitch in .Got the week off and am looking fish.

The Shad run on the Umpqua usually starts around Memorial week end . Yellow Creek boat ramp is one of the better spots up river from Elkton. Most people I saw there a couple years ago use a small curly tail grub in chartruese or red and drift from bank like you would for steelhead.good luck , LAND SHARK

We have a shad pamphlet if anyone is interested in getting a copy. Send me your mailing address and I will send one out. It has info on history and how to fish for them.

Spent last Sat. on theUmpqua looking for shad. Fished Sawyers rapids awahile, no luck. Went up to Yellow CR. launched my pontoon boat and floated to Yellow Cr. There were 18 guys fishing in a row in one spot, I saw 2 fish caught in 1/2 Hr. I don't call that hot. So I changed gear and went for smallies down river aways. Now THAT WAS HOT!! Caught 8 over 2 pounds, lost 6 that were at least that big. Caught 20 or so smaller ones. I was trolling a 1/4 Oz. jighead W/ red/purple"Rattlesnake' 3in. plastic worm, and I anointed it with craw/anise oil. They couldn't lay off of it. Bottom line is; shad Slow, smallies good.

Lots of Shad in the river right now.

6-9 boats trolling a 300 yd stretch, 100+ fish caught in just a couple hours..
