This evening my friends and I went down to the trestle hole on the lower Clack below I205 to do some bobber fishing for springers. There is a guy there, early forties i guess, drives a new red cherokee, that gets all ***** about us coming down to "his hole" (my buddies had not even wet a line) and yelling about how he has been fishing there for "15 years and he has never seen us!" Now I wondered if this was his private hole and he held paper on it - apparently not as he stormed up the bank cursing us...... Is this a big secret hole? Is there anyone that that fishes the Clack does not know about this hole? Did I discover the long lost fishing hole of the Lost Dutchman? The Motherload!!??? (did not catch a fish by the way)
Or is this guy just an idiot, as I suspect? What is wrong with this 12 year old? I buy my license and tag just like him, what can he be thinking? Clue me in please, any ideas to know how to deal with these kind of yahoos? And I sure hope he is reading this on his Mommy's pc right now....dc

I think I read on this board about an insident on or near that hole about a year and a half ago. If I can remember it right there was a fight and someone fell in the river. Any one remember this?

Batman -
I saw you and your friends there tonight. I was in the Red Sled trying to coax one out above you in the fast water. I didn't get one either.
Hope you didn't think I was encroaching on your spot. Didn't think I was, but sorry if I did. I have often thought that would be a good eddy to work a bobber and egg setup.
Anyway, I did not see your confrontation with that guy. He must be a real jerkwad. That is clearly public access and he has no claim on it. I doubt he is reading about himself here though because guys like that seldom read, even the few that can!
Looked like you had some numbers tonight (or was that not all your group?) Frankly that may be the only safe way to deal with that kind of situation. Just don't let it get physical. He will get his due in all the bad Karma he reigns down on himself! Take solace in that...

Just walk up to him real friendly like and say, "Hi, my name's Batman and this here's Robin. We will be fishing here most of the day. Got any good tips?" Remember to smile.
Seriously, just keep a good friendly attitude and don't be intimidated. He has not been fishing there for the last 15 years by himself.

Thanks for the advice guys! And we saw you too Hogmaster - you weren't in our way, we were hoping you would hook something just to let us know that there were fish there.
You know the funny thing about this guy is that when I was down there on Sunday I saw him land two fish in five minutes - good fisherman, bad attitude.....He was whining about the rest of us in the hole that day too as he hid the one keeper he caught in the bushes - I would like to take a look at his salmon tag, I bet there is nothing on it for Sunday.
At any rate, I may have to start fishing there every day with 5 or 6 of my good friends, graemlins/idea.gif hmmm....... thanks again, batman

There can be some awefully nasty folks that fish that area. He must of been from some low rent district and bought his new jeep on foodstamps.
Glad I went up river and did not witness this dimwit in action. What a dork.

Actually, batman, maybe I did see him. Did he walk up from down below. Have dark brown Neopremes? Or was that one of your group.. Seemed I noticed some animated conversation going on.
For what it is worth, I have been fishing that spot for 16 years! So next time you see him you can let him know the Hogmaster gave you a pass to be there
Anybody who has fished that area for that long knows the entire river changed after 96. He certainly can't claim a particular rock because the rocks have disapeared (or the water has!)
I was hoping that I could show there were fish in that hole too! They were on the graph, but alas not in the boat.
Tight lines!

Last year we all got together and went fishing in this guys hole, all at the same time. I think It's time to get a bank floatilla going down at High Rocks.

I had a similar incident happen at Dahl Park a couple weeks ago. I pulled in on the blacktop and was rigging my rod to cast when one of five guys already fishing there advised me that "the same people have fished from the same spots along the bank for years", then walked away. I took it as an implication that I wasn't welcome. I went ahead and fished for an hour or so anyway and none of the five talked to me during that time. They didn't catch anything and I didn't either. But I was sure hoping I would catch something, anything, before they did.

I've said it before ... and I'll say it again. It offends some people but I am extremely offended by the scumbag lowlife attitude displayed on the riverbank in the vicinity of the unmentionable town.
Here's a little blast from the past .... Member dis?

I am from Oregon City and have fished this spot with my buddies before I got my boat. I never ran into this guy before. It's sad to think that someone thinks they own the river. I have lived in OC all of my life and to be very honest it's not the people who live there it's the individual's attitude. This guy is very lucky to run into people with level heads, next time he may not be so lucky and he'll be yelling for graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Pilar-
You have issues man   ....but after I read your story from last year I seem to understand a little better why you have them.
Im not saying everyone from no name town is a fishing saint.....JUST ME
Hope you're back kickin 'but on big blue
I'll keep my graemlins/eek13.gif out for this fellow, and his new red jeep. I spend plenty of time on the CLack and other nearby rivers. I'll spot 'em.
Incidentily, I drive a red jeep, and live in the Milwaukie area. But I am in my 20's and have no problem sharing with ya'll! I'd take everyone fishing if I could......
So don't start with me.. I'm on your side
Ditto to BIGDOG!

What side of the river are you on and where do you park? Is that area called High Rocks or some thing to that effect? Eggs under a bobber? I will see ya there...

Cohodependent, this hole is below (downstream) the High Rocks Hole about 1000 feet on the north side of the river, where Portland Street deadends at the river. There is a large municipal water supply uptake tower and the old trestle is adjacent to this tower. The trail is just downstream of the tower. yes, I will see you there. Good luck, b

Oh yeah, eggs under a bobber is the ticket - shrimp too of you like.

batman,
You should warn coho, though, that if he isn't part billygoat the trail down from the road to the water is, well, a bit intimidating shall we say?
You come down beneath the bridge and must straddle a large pipe (like 4') at the bottom of the hill.
The water there is a rather large back eddy that brings water to the bank and upstream. You might get away with casting a spinner there, but drift fishing would not work out. There is some good drift water on down below the eddy, where there is a tailout leading to the rapids.
Batman, after you guys left last night I happened to motor slowly through there. Marked it at 18.5' at its deepest spot, although most of the hole ranges from 10 - 15. There were lots of fish there too!
Coho, sledders like me generally fish the fast water that leads into the hole upstream from the eddy. That is another reason it is good from the bank there. The eddy is very large and so there is ample room without having to worry about bank/boat conflicts. A sledder would really have to go out of his way to plow through the eddy.
Sounds like Mr. Jeep lays claim to the entire stretch from eddy to tail out!

Hogmaster, thanks for the info on depth! great information! It does distress me that there were so many fish and no hook ups, I suspected as much...bite was just off last night. It is a great bobber hole, lots of room and your bait just goes round and round..... then down and down if all goes well! and yes the trail is a little steep and slippery, but not too bad, wear rubber boots tho to walk along the abutment. well, next time. batman

No hogmaster that guy in the brown neos was OK. Thanks to all of you guys for the support, this has been a very interesting thread! It is sad though that this kind of behavior is really pretty effective - I bet many of us have not returned to where an incident like this has happened - I will however, just to say he did not scare me off, I think he is just a blowhard anyway, harmless really. And, like Pilar's great thread suggested, I would like to invite you all to "my new fishing hole" under the old trestle downstream from the I205 bridge on the Clack! It would just tickle me to death to see this guy blow a blood vessel when he learns that this river is not his alone. And it is a good hole to fish. See you on the river! Batman
i fished there a couple times the bums looked at me like i was walking though their front yard but i fish anyway.i though about cooking up some nookie for them if i caught one.they had beer what more do you need

I saw this guy down there under the bridge again this morning - did not fish since he was there. But I misspoke about his rig, it is a new red Toyota 4-Runner. Just so everyone can be aware of this guy. Cheers, batman

Pretty sad when ONE guy can hog a huge hole and even the downstream drift. That area can comfortably fish 5 or 6 bobbers in the eddy itself!
Better luck next time, batman!
