A couple of friends and myself are going to head out for our first ever sturgeon fishing attempt this saturday. We have a fairly short anchor rope so we are hoping to fish shallower holes, near either camas or st helens. The only problem is, we have no idea where to start. Would anyone be willing to give up a well known hole where we might catch a keeper?

Thanks Alot,

Jeff

Well I would say get a longer anchor rope first if you are going to fish the Columbia River  . The Trout Dale area around the power line is a well known hole, up river around Roster Rock on the Washington side near the Train Tunnel is a good area to fish. Just look for boats that are anchored in the deeper water.Hope it helps and I ment no offence with the comment about the anchor rope. Most guys have at least 300 hundred foot and a rocker type anchor with 6 to 20 feet of chain from anchor to the rope. You may want to look into a anchor puller also.

I wholely agree with fishalot about anchor rope and puller. If you don't have enough rope you limit your self to where you can fish, and with a short rope most people wind up anchoring where they should not, that can be dangerous, how do I know ,,,, Been there done that .... up around the fishery is good also, that is one place you need to have that long anchor rope. Across from MULT. falls aint to shaby. Good luck..

Sturgeon holes are usually 70-150 ft deep. Other places like astoria and bonneville are shallower, but you need a longer rope because of the current. If your rope is at least 150ft, I can suggest many good places. If not, fish for something else.

There are some nice spots just inside the end of the channel near Scappoose, just along side the log booms. You might also try the other side of St. Helens in front of Columbia City. There are some relatively shallow holes that kick out fish. But keep this in mind, too. Sturgeon fishing often means moving around, so tune up your depth finder and plan to do a little hunting until you dial in some biters.

Thanks alot for all of the suggestions guys. I know we need a longer anchor rope, but it's not an option at this time

GI Joes has the 300' spools of anchor line on sale for $45.00 (reg $60). They also have some anchors and pullers on sale.

Ok I just obtained a 150 foot rope, buoy, and anchor. Our boat has a depth finder but not a fish finder. After dropping bait and not getting bites whats the average amount of time you recommend sitting at a hole? 15 minutes? We have some frozen smelt for bait, and will probally try to catch some shad.

Thanks,

Jeff

YOU CAN TRY TONGUE POINT IN THE SHALLOWS. TAKE THE JOHN DAY RIVER OUT TO THE POINT THEN GO EAST ONTO THE FLATS AND FISH IN ABOUT 6' TO 15' OF WATER. I WOULDN'T WAIT ANYMORE THAN 1/2 HR WITHOUT A BITE BEFORE MOVING. HOPE THIS HELPS
