I want to get into the shad fishing thing for peeler bait but would like to do it in a relaxed atmosphere. I have heard reports on coon island and was wondering where it's at. I am a regular at T-6 and Cathedral park and was hoping it was in the near area of Fred's Marina. My daughter would love to catch some shad but after fighting the crowds for springers, I am in no big hurry to hit OC. If some of you shad slayers would kick down some tips and techniques I would gladly repay the favor in some awesome sturgeon spots for the Portland area and Astoria.
Thanks....

Tacklebuster - Coon Island is located in the Multnomah slough, equivelent to where Scappoose is on Hwy. 30. It would be a pretty good run downstream from Fred's. You can drive down Hwy. 30, take a right on Johnson's Landing road(directly after the Texaco station at the outskirts of Scappoose) and drive straight to and over the dike to what people refer to as Brown's landing launch. From there it is downstream around two bends, about 1 mile.
Or, you can drive out Sauvie's Island to the Gilbert River launch. From there it is up river about 1/4 mile. There are some great past posts on Shad fishing techniques. It's fun and it's easy.

Tackelbuster--trere is another good launch at Happy Rock Marina. It's located right below the weigh station on hi30.About 200yds past the station turn right, over the rr tracks, then another right.
The ramp is a good one and the security in the lot is great.I live at the moorage and we never have had a problem.
As long as your boat does not throw a damaging wake you can make good time to Coon Is.,about 5 or 6 mi.
The depth in that area, from coon is. marina [no services or launch]to the downstream end of the island is pretty uniform,12 to 15 ft ,depending on the hight of the river .
You will want to use a rock anchor as most of the bottom is rocky,I have seen people use a dansforth type but they don't always hold.
The gear you use is the same as OC,about a 30 in dropper with a spreader and a 36in leader tied to your favorite "bug"
Good luck ---just watch your wake in areas where there are houses

During the week O.C. hasn't been to crowded. Weekends might be another story though.

Yes...Coon Isle is a nice low stress spot. I was there twice last week, got a box-o-shad and an overdue springer (see post: "Shad, Sun Tans, and Chinook - Coon Isle."). Coon Isle is on the Multnomah Channel (slough) a little over half way to St. Helens. It is the only island on the channel so its easy to find on a map or GPS. There is a ramp (Gilbert ramp, I think) very nearby, just past the nude beach on Sauvie Isle and to your left. Rig heavy...one in 20 fish will have red meat.
