I started steelheading with float and jig back in Jan. '97. Saw the setup in a magazine article and then bought a book. At that time I was almost always the only person I'd see on the Clack or Eagle Creek fishing with jigs. Now the majority of boats going by have floats on the lines. When did this happen?

I caught my first steelhead on a jig in June of 1990. I caught my first Chinook in October of 1990...on the same red jig. Yea Baby.

i picked up a spinger under a float using sand shrimp a few years back. i was reading a bunch of reports that black jigs were the hot ticket for springers and that's what got me using them for everything else. picked up my first winter on a pink worm under a float last december.

Around 1990- upper clack above the N. Fork Dam. Jim Bradbury got me started. Usually able to pick up my 2 fish by 9am and get home before the wife even got out of bed. It really sucks they quit doing hatchery fish above N. Fork. We are going to loose more good fisheries if they don't sort out this hatchery funding issue. Anyone know whatever happened to Jim Bradbury?

I caught my first jig fish in about 84-85 on the Cowlitz. A cool guy at Blue Creek gave me some pointers and a jig and I walked out with a limit.

Bad thing was, I rarely used them after that until about 6 or 7 years ago. I fished them with decent success. Then about 4 years ago, I was lucky enough to fish with a guy who was a float and jig machine. I watched and learned, and since them I've been more successful than I ever was before.

About 3 years ago, you started seeing floats and jigs being used widely, and now it seems like half the guys are using floats. Still, many of them haven't got it all figured out yet. Just like any other type of fishing.....there are good float fishers and then there are REALLY good float fishers.

I still like drift fishing and spinner/spoon fishing, but I spend the majority of my time fishing floats.

My first steelhead with a jig was in the late 50's (Yes I know many of you were not even a *****le at that time). Well I really can't say I was fishing for Steelhead but well fishing for shad at the falls area on Black Point, I hooked a nice one. Thought it was a fluke and didn't pursue that method of fishing after that. Should have as I missed many good years of fishing with them. Many buddies caught them too but never actually fished for steelhead with a jig either. Oh well, live and learn.
