It is better if you freeze them before vac packing.

By far the best way that I've found is to go to your nearest food store and get about 30 of the styrafoam trays from the meat section. Lay your herring flat on those trays and vacuum pack the suckers just like you buy them in the store. I pour all of the herring in a bucket to kinda rinse off the jeez from them before I pack 'em. Works out very nice and easy to store.

I'm planning on jigging for some herring in Newport next Fri 5/17/02. What is the best way to preserve 'em for August Bouy 10 fishing? I was thinking of taking my vacuum packer and sealing them up right away, and putting them on ice till I get them in a freezer.

Skipper,
I have had good luck with laying them out in layers of tinfoil and herring in the freezer and then vacuum sealing them after they are frozen. You can also dip them in cold water to glaze them so they have absoutely no chance of freezer burning.
