I took out my Father-in-law on Wed afternoon 5/8/02, and fished the Willamette by Meldrum Bar from 3:30 to 8:45p. Saw some spotty action, but after a few boats left, we had a big biter at 7:00p that was spooling line so fast it was burning Walt's thumb on the spool. I reeled in the other pole, pulled in the sea anchor, cast off the anchor rope, and grabbed the net. Then the big fish spit out the wrapped kwikfish. :depressed: At 7:15p Walt had another biter, but it didn't get hooked. At 7:30p I got one on my pole, and set the hook. Boated a 12 lb spring chinook keeper.
On Thursday 5/9/02, I took Walt again, along with John Lieggi in the morning. We fished below the bulkhead from 6:00a to 10:20a. Only saw one caught. We didn't get any bites on 2 kwikfish or a prawn spinner. Dropped Walt off at 10:30a, John & I fished the upper Lake Line from 11:00a to 12:45p. No biters, but the guy next to us had 7 biters and limited with four keepers by 12:30p using sand shrimp. John had to leave, but went and bought some sand shrimp and green cheaters for me. I went back out by myself from 1:00 to 3:30p, anchored in the same spot. Using sand shrimp for the first time on the Willamette, I got a bite at 2:20p, a real fighter. I drifted and fought that fish for 300 yards, maneuvering the boat past the lower lake line, and finally boated a 10 lb keeper that had a nasty seal bite in the tail. At 3:15p I got another bite, set the hook, drifted, and boated another 12 lb keeper. I was limited out! Went and picked up two friends at the dock at 3:45p (Andy Gribionkin, and David Pelto). I set one up with a shrimp, the other bait wrapped K15. Both lines got two biters. Andy got a 18 lb'er on shrimp, and David got a 10 lb'er on the K15. We were stoked. I was hoping to limit those guys too but it didn't happen. Fished till 8:20p. Still the most productive day on the river in my boat in two years with four keepers. I felt sorry that John and Walt missed out on all the action.
We are BBQ salmon for Judy's entire family on Sunday (Mother's day).
Cheerio'
