After the meeting in Tillamook tuesday my son ,sister and I talked on our way back to Salem.
Where does the money for the "extra" harvest tags go? Into the general fund? if so..why couldn't the money from these sales be zoned according to which hatchery or hatcheries that are severing the area we are fishing and the money from these tags go directly to these hatcheries? The three hatcheries that are as of now being shut down could be on one tag zone, Columbia on another and the valley on another etc... The sole purpose to us as fisherman is to allow us to take clipped hatchery fish. If we want the use of an "extra" tag in more than 1 area we buy 2 tags.
I believe this way the money we choose to spend in the areas we choose to fish would benefit the individual hatcheries and no fisherperson or non-fisherperson would have a legitimate complaint as to having their dollars go to support an industry they don't partake of. If money taken into the "system" is not designated to any particular area and is put into the general fund it is out of our control and may be spent any where a handful of politicians decide it should go. I don't want the money I spend on fishing to go into siting manufactured homes on prison land so the people who stole my gear can have conjugal visits, just as an example of general fund dollars!

Jooky - I already buy non-resident tags and I could afford $200 for extra tags, but, should fishing be a privilege only for those who can afford it?

I think I know what your intent is but costs that high would price a lot of people out of fishing, especially families and those on a fixed income.

A reasonable amount more is fine with me. I think the problem is allocation of the dollars that we already put into the big pot and the fact that some of the biggest resouce consumers are not paying their fair share.

Why are we allowing the harvest of hatchery fish buy a commercial fleet for less than the cost of raising the fish? Makes no sense to me.

Hatchery tags are a great idea but this is the government here.At least they carry the idea that a hatchery fish is a terrible thing to waste. The commercials are organized and funded. They play the game well.We do not.If you do not fish, but would like to eat some salmon, how do you get some?At the store like Safeway. If commercial fisherman paid the same per fish fees as we do then ONE salmon steak would cost 50 dollars!!A price most would not pay.Farmed fish are costly in comparison to commercially caught fish.Nothing is as easy as we want it to be.The best advice I can offer is to volunteer 1 day a year to help your favorite fishery.Whether you clip fins, sweep floors,or help with repairs or habitat restoration you will make a difference. If we all made this one day promise, all stocks would benefit.
Good Luck.
