Best fishing was on the flood ... a tip for all novice herring fisherman when you get one fish on just leave you gear down for another minute and the action generated by the herring will attract others and soon it will be 5 or 6 at a time.

Good advice, Bait Boy.
And, if you got em, take your kids...or the neighbor's kids. They love fishing for herring. Use super light rods so the kids can really feel the 6 squirming fish on the line.
Good Luck!

The fleet took 60,000 metric tons of herring in the past 14 days out of Yaquina Bay !

I got to Yaquina bay Saturday at 10:30 and the fish bit really well until 12:40. High tide showed at 1:02 in my book. The bite died about 1/2 hour before high tide. I had my mom and dad with me and my 4 year old son. We put 130 in the boat in that 2 1/2 hours. We kind of had a slow start getting rigged up and dialed in. The snoopy pole was the hot stick, putting the rest of us to shame.
Today my mother asked to go back for mother days she had so much fun on Saturday. We got to the bay at 10:30 again and fishing was good to 1:00 when it just died before the high tide. We put 260 herring in the boat today.  Mom had the hod rod today and informed the rest of us when the bite died as were only got about 1/2 of the fish she did.
Mom and Dad kept 60 to pickle  and I brought the rest home for bait. I have about 27 dozen herring now for bait. I dont think I will be buying any herring the rest of this year.
I wish I knew what I was doing to preserve them better. When we caught them we put them in a cooler of ice and water. Some of them would die with their mouth wide open and some would die with it closed. By the time I got them home I had a cooler full of scales seperated from the fish. Some I put in rock salt, powdered milk and borax with a little water to cure them a little. (seen that recipe on another discussion board) Some I put in rock salt and blueing, some I froze up straight. Does anybody have any good recipes for curing/preparing fresh caught herring?
They take a lot of room in the freezer when you have 27 dozen of them.

Scrod,
I seriously doubt commercial fishing landed 60,000 metric tons of herring from the bay in 14 days. Maybe you mean 60,000lbs total?

I stopped at the local grocery store today and bought 25 foam trays meat comes on for vacumn packing the herring on. I had to pay a whopping 4 cents a piece for them.

Pilar - I stopped at the local Thriftway near my house. I talked to the fellow in the meat section. They had 4 sizes of foam trays and it was 4 cents per, size didnt matter. I would have liked to get the big ones, but they wouldnt fit in the vacumn bags. One size down worked well with the bags and I could get a dozen herring on them pretty easy.
If you cant find or get any, I will pick some up for you.

Fished Yaquina yesterday for herring, the only place we found herring in any large numbers was right off the entrance to harbor at South Beach. The tide is fairly strong here, so bring a heavy anchor and anchor up just past past the east side of the entrance.

Herring harvested for bait are held live and cut off from food for a few days. The starvation reduces the "belly burn" or mushy body caused from the digestive acids that are "cooking" when you jig feeding herring. Now, you could pump the stomaches of your herring. A good fly fishing person might take a small stomach pump (looks like a tinny kitchen baster you might use when cooking the turkey)to check out what flys the fish are eating. Can you immagine "pumping" a gross of herring. They also might electrocute the herring when they pull them out of the starvation / holding tank. It keeps them from squirming out of their scales, so to speak.
Good luck on the fresh bait.
