Got a e-mail from EZREALM titled Mustad Hooks. When I opened the file it had an attachment that said ultimatebb. I clicked on it figuring it was this site and my Norton Anti-Virus identified a virus!

If you get this e-mail do not open it.

Thanks for the heads up!! I know large BB's become targets for that type of stuff. Please tell me this site hasn't grown to the point of attracting the  graemlins/eek13.gif graemlins/program.gif

I have never heard of anyone getting a virus from a bulletin board!
That seems rediculous.
How would that happen?

I haven't gotten any since I have been here, so, Madwizard, i'm sceptical that this is the source, though the att filtering software may just be catching any such probes.

Jennie, bulletin boards, or more commonly newsgroups, are common sources of e-mail addresses for spammers and no-goodniks. There is commonly available software that will read every message on ever newsgroup and use that to build a list of e-mail addreses to add to a database. If you build a profile for a Usenet newsgroup, a good practice is to set up your e-mail address in the form of andrewbr@NOSPAM.TAKETHISOUT.attbi.com.

I don't know if the UBB software is common enough to have become a target yet. I doubt it.

The best approach is obviously to keep your Norton installed and up to date, and use a firewall if you have always up connectivity. I use two - call me a belt and suspenders kind of a guy.

No, the board cannot get viruses - but people who want you to open their SPAM will sometimes cull a board, take the
domain that it's on and then format the mail to look like it's legit.

Here is my suggestion: Use Outlook or Outlook Express with the PREVIEW WINDOW set to ON.

Outlook Express: View -> Layout -> Check the "Preview Pane" box and then choose how you want it setup.
Outlook: View -> Preview Pane

Why?

Simple - when you double click on a message in Outlook or Outlook Express if there is script inside the message or an
OBJECT tag (a virus - vbs script file, or the like) Once opened, Outlook & Outlook express will compile and execute the
script, at which point you can only HOPE that Norton will fire up and save your bottom.

BY USING THE PREVIEW WINDOW THE TEXT CAN BE READ BUT SCRIPT, IF ANY, DOES NOT COMPILE

Plus - you can 'right click' in the Preview Pane and do a "View Source" and SEE what the snot-nosed little brats wanted
to have happen to you

So - my suggestions, keep Norton Anti-virus updated, pay for the subscriptions and make sure that your web updates are
regular and that you do them BEFORE you open your email up. Also, use the preview window to read and review your
email. Delete messages which are only an attached object UNLESS YOU ARE EXPECTING it and know EXACTLY what it is.

There you have it my friend

Feel free to post this one up.

I hope that I don't step on any egos with this post, but I need to take issue with Mr. Harris regarding his suggestion to leave the preview window open in Outlook and Outlook Express. When the preview pane is open in Outlook it can and will launch viruses simply by viewing the mail (for reference see this (http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/nimda/default.asp?cid=2444) link over at McAfee's site regarding the nasty Nimda virus or this (http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q316658&) article at Microsoft's site about the Klez virus).

Please note that not all viruses will launch through the preview pane, and conversely turning off the preview pane will not protect you from viruses if you end up opening the email anyway. However, by turning off the preview pane you will at least get a chance to recognize that the email might be hazardous before Outlook "previews" it (and potentially launches malicious code) for you.

Again, I hope that nobody gets their feathers ruffled about this and also that I explained this as non-techie as it needs to be. I've received two viruses in the last week and fortunately I make it a habit of not opening unexpected and/or suspicious emails with attachments, and I also keep my virus software up-to-date.

I'm sure he won't get ruffled, as he doesn't read ifish.
If you'd like to call him on it, his phone is listed.
I don't use Outlook, so I have no clue!

All I understand is that you can't get a virus from a bulletin board. You have to open an attachment. This board has no attachments, thus, no virus! You get viruses through e mail attachments, and some web pages that automatically open attachments.

No one has mentioned the KLEZ virus that is the
biggie out there. I currently use pc-cillin
and would have been dead in the water if it wasn't
used this past week.
If you go to PC-cillin you can do a free virus
check.
KLEZ has been caught on my email at least 10 times the past two weeks. The last subject on
an email had to do with a VISA something security
and was in fact the KLEX virus. It does not come
in any words that look suspicious.

Point of clarification:
I'm sorry Jennie. I did not mean to infer that the board itself had a virus or that it could perpetuate a virus. That is done through e-mail. Large groups have been targeted by hate-monger politicos in the past. BB's are used as a source for e-mail addies and as you say the snot nosed little buggers (or left wing politicos) can disguise their cancers to look like legit e-mails from the board itself or other members.
I do not believe that anyone considers our group as a politicaly organized threat. YET !!!! But hey!......this weeks showing at Tillamook is progress. graemlins/idea.gif

You can help stop the spread of virues by making your very first addressie an alphanumeric (IE)
!000@yahoo.com or **990@hotmail.com. The mail server doesn't reconize the string and can't send it on.

I received the Amish virus the other day in snail mail. It asked me to go into my computer and delete random files. Pretty nasty stuff.

I know that all the way around, people are getting more viruses, as of about 2 weeks ago.
I have many non fishing friends e mailing me asking me what to do.
I think it is just a wild time!
I can promise you that I don't give anyone access to the e mail addies on ifish except for the ifish elves.
