I watched a guy reel in a shad this morning. It took a red label herring.. No **** ... No Joke. I saw him put it in the boat and hold it up after the fact. I have never seen that before... I guess it is time for some to get out the dick nites and have some fun...

Pardon me for being such a skeptic, but has anyone EVER heard of a lowly shad taking a herring? Their mouth isn't big enough for anything much larger than a Dick Nite (Red/white).

Guys, I'll bet you a nickle he was in the coon Is. area.
I'll buy this one. The poor shad was probably just attracted by the flash and got hung up on one of the hooks. That's how I catch multiple smolt every year on herring. They could never get it in they're mouth, just attracted to the flash.

Alot of "where's" on this thread. So how many of you are going to be after halibut next weekend  . Is there an actual season on shad in the Willamette? I need some for bait. What do you think the fine would be for keeping shad out of season.

I've heard of a shad caught on eggs before. I heard of one caught in O.C. in the last day or so.
The Willamette is open for shad but the Columbia isn't.

They have been catching Shad on the Umpqua for 3 weeks now. I personally caught 30 Monday, in the Yellow Creek area.

Coon island is where guys.... One boat reeled in 3 in the time I could see him as I trolled by so I think that there are quite a few in the river..
I saw "Bite Me" guide service fishing in the Oregon City area today and catching Shad. I saw the first one. He said he caught six.

Rags which one were you? Yep we were trying to get sturgeon bait for a oversized trip I have on fri and we were successful 6 fresh shad in the box and in a couple of more days they will be in there allot better. Oh and what a shame to have to net two springers as well. two rods six shad two hatchery 15lbers and a nice day to boot. One of the springers came on a red and silver dick nite and the other was on a rather odd colored spinner and prawn combo (think tillamook colors) we also had another takedown on the same color. all in all we saw about 25 or 30 springers caught.

Need help,
What is the closest boat ramp near Coon Island. I think that I fished there years ago and we put in at Browns landing? Could be mistaken? Thanks in advance.
Biteme,
I was the teal colored Alumaweld that came by you and said I saw your new boat on the Ifish board. We got two that day. One clipped and one nice unclipped.
