So the Guv wants another half billion bucks (billion, with a "b") for Columbia salmon, while he closes three hatcheries in the Tillamook area, thereby literally destroying fishing and the trickle-down economy in that whole area, all for a few hundred thousand in savings. Hard to figure that guy.

Thumper, I note you're from the great state of WA.
The issue is easy to figure once you understand that it's two separate and very distinct pots of money.
The coastal hatcheries are funded by the state's general fund. They have to vie for the money out of the same pot that funds schools, state police, some health care, etc.
Columbia funding is from the Federal government as part of their commitment to sustain and restore runs impacted by the Federal dams. In choosing to NOT breach the 3 Snake R. dams, the Feds. made promises to do certain things. These promises have not been kept and I'm grateful that Gov. Kitzhaber has the backbone to stand up and say the hard words - if the dams stay and the promises aren't kept, the fish will be lost.
Rather than trying to trash Kitzhaber, how about contacting your Gov. Locke and asking him to pressure the Bush administration to keep the Fed's promises? That's something positive and we'll all be better off.
BTW, with 90% of the fall run being river-spawned fish, closing those three hatcheries is not going to destroy the fishing and economy, and I'll add that I am a Tillamook county tax payer.

Wow GaryK, that is good news indeed. Guess we have nothing to worry about for the folks in Tillamook county!

if "the other guy" had been elected, maybe all the hatcheries would be closed by now. Government waste and all ...

Kitzhaber is a clown. Lacking in forsight, judgment, or leadership he is just another undequalified overpaid tax and spend state of Oregon employee, voted in by a small minority of votes; the few that have not already given up and don't want to see thier welfare checks reduced. If you want fish from this guy, use him for chum.
