View Full Version : Anchors - Why can't people be reasonable?

OK, so after work tonight a bud and I hit the Willamette at the Garbage Hole in OC. There was a very good bite going on. Both the hogline and the backtrollers were getting takedowns. I took a nice (yes they all are!) 14 lb hatchery hog backbouncing a shrimp/egg cocktail after only 1/2 hour of fishing.
Anyway, The hogline contained many boats, to the outer limits of the normal anchor zone. There were a few other boats anchored upstream on the same side too. And one or two on the OC side like we often see.
My buddy and I, along with many other boats, were backbouncing in the "slot" that the backtrollers have traditionally always used when a large white sled Suddenly motored up DIRECTLY in line with my boat, dropped the anchor literally almost on top of my gear, let out a long amount of anchor line and set up for fishing.
Several trollers gave him a bit of whatfor, but he just ignored the comments and questions.
Now don't get me wrong. I anchor too. But I would not ever want to do so in a way that inhibits so many others from being able to catch fish. It was a newer sled, I did not see bumpers, and after all he must not have had a warm disposition or he might have been in a line. But even if he wasn't into banging boats and/or socializing, why could he not have anchored somewhere closer to the OC side, or upstream, or anywhere besides in the middle of the slot?
Sure enough about 1/2 hour later my bud hooked a fish just off his anchor. While we did get it in (another 14 lb hatchery variety), he had to tight line it and really took the enjoyment out of the whole "play". In fact, in addition to our fish I saw 3 others that had to make similar mooves.
I know some of you Garbage Hole hogliners read this. Everyone needs to pull together on this, guys! When I was in the line over the weekend I saw a similar incident take place. Some in the hogline were cheering the boorish behavior of that guy. It is wrong. Anchor away from the trollers. There is plenty of good river for both.
If he had been there first, I would not have been happy but would have been more accepting. But to mess up 20, 30 or 50 fishermen's drift "because you can" - well, there is just something wrong with that!

My husband came back with that same story. He said he watched the guy put his anchor down on top of lines. Must have been you. He also said the guy ignored the comments of the back-trollers. I guess if you have a bigger boat than the majority it gives you "special" rights. All those people fishing together in that small area, and one idiot has to spoil the fun. :hoboy:

Yeah, it was me. My only real solace came from the fact that he and his rude friend got no bites. In fact several were caught all around him. I wanted to speak with him reasonably, but he was too impaired by his cranial ****** inversion to hold an intelligent conversation!!!

"chronic salmonidiotits" we have an outbreak of this every year about this time. It happens again in August thru Nov.

If someone anchors where people are backtrolling, he probably shouldn't be surprised if his anchor rope comes up with a bunch of hooks in it, should he?
Seems to me that a little careful trolling and the donation of a few rigs might educate this fellow. Ever tried to get a hook out of an anchor rope?

That's a thought, Silver Hilton, but personally I would rather keep fishing than re-rigging.
The nice fellows that they were, after setting with a long scope and fishing for 20 or 30 minutes then dropped the anchor to go pick up another angler? and a pre-teen. Then of course they set the side rods at wide angles so those of us backtrolling had to give even wider berth.
It wasn't proper to engage in conversation with how many of us really felt - not with a kid in the boat. I only hope he takes after someone else in his family!
When they did pull in and almost crushed my gear I couldn't help backing down slowly until I could drop right below them and hold right above their gear. Did so for about 20 minutes until they dropped off to make their pickup. Where I was holding was right where I had picked up my fish earlier...
They didn't say anything but were giving me the "Hair in the soup" look.
Frankly I catch fish frequently right under other boats while backtrolling so it may not make any difference out there anyway, but it felt better. This guy managed to mess up a significant amount of river!
He must come from a family with money because there is no way he could have EARNED enough to pay for that boat!

Hey guys, get the T shirt that says
'Oregon city is for A-holes'
and you'll be all set. Good luck!

That's funny Pilar, can you really get a t-shirt that says that? If so, where?
Pilar

Don't know. If you find one, let me know. I saw a t-shirt once that said ...
'Virginia is for lovers'
Same principle, different place. Very different.
Prolly any shopping mall t-shirt vender could be persuaded, especially if they had ever fished the blacktop or the garbage hole.

Actually, I think a Tee with
"I KNOW JACK ****, DO YOU?"
fits OC a little better!

65# power pro will cut an anchor line like butter. Just an observation I've made in the past.

Hey Pilar-
Of course there is no where else that stupid people do stupid things. How about fishing is for ***holes. Keep your shirt ideas to yourself, and with that attitude, fish somewhere else too.
I have seem some super strange things on the Columbia too, and you don't see me popping off about it, saying such and such area is full of people like that. Nope, but it seems one or two apples can ruin a bunch!!
Have a nice day. (Now that would be a good shirt).
But it sounds like the one to fit this guy was :
YOU.... Out of the Gene pool
 TO Springers in OC !!!!

I'm puzzled as to why you would attack a certain fishing group.
I mean, hey.... don't we have enough trouble uniting as fishermen? Do we have the luxury to separate ourselves from one another?
Fishing in this location is crowded, I understand.
Whenever you get a whole bunch of fishermen together, no matter where you are, you will have problems to deal with.
I would be very offended if this were my home place to fish.
Actually, I grew up fishing there. It wasn't as crowded then, but it was still pretty hoppin!
Why is Oregon City for ********?

Wow, chill out dude(Chris). We all make jokes at other people's expense sometimes, thats why it's funny. We all get our turn to receive too. There are alot of complaints about fishing etiquette in O.C. on this board. The reason isnt because there are more a-holes in O.C.
it's just that with the narrow waterway, they are just more concentrated. There are probably just as many on the Columbia, they just have the elbow room to spread out! Pilar, no reason to recant, it's still kinda funny

Chris .. I will gladly fish somewhere else. In fact I'm thinking that I will never equate the relaxation that most derive from fishing with the Willamette or Clackamas rivers in the vicinity of OC. As a result, you will never see me fishing there. You are right on with the fact that things happen everywhere. By your adrenaline level, I would say that you fish in OC a little too much.
And if you really like that place, don't tolerate the 'Bad Apples' as you put it. Put them in their place. Accepting that behavior means you approve of it and the impression it makes on people like me.
The shirts are $15 and come in three colors and 4 sizes........... Just kidding .........

Hey all,
My apologies to Jenny and everyone else. I started this thread because I was looking for some united perspective with both hogliners and backtrollers in OC.
I had no idea that there are so many hard feelings about the OC area. I fish there because I live there. A lot of others do too. And yes it is concentrated so there are bound to be more that notice when an incident like I had last night takes place. But if you guys think this is crowded, try fishing for sockeye on the Russian River in Alaska! That is true combat fishing!!
But crowded or not, "Can't we all just get along?" I will be back there tonight. Won't see Pilar, but maybe some of the rest of you...
PS Jennie - Hope that tooth problem came out OK!

I agree with you Chris. I live in Milwaukie, and fish O.C. all the time. Yes there is on occasion an ididot who doesn't have a clue as to common courtesy. But, for the most part, people in the O.C. area are really great folks, and I enjoy fishing there!! Yes it gets very crowded but if people don't like the crowds, then go elsewhere!!

Hogmaster, don't apologize, it's my bad. If you want to help, check out 'objectionable fishing'. Let's keep it general and try not to insult anyone like I did. My frustration level with combat fishing is pretty high and with certain places in particular.
The problem is on the river not in the town.

Howdy,
I didn't mean to sound pumped or anything, it just seems that the area still has a bad air about it from years ago, when I was growing up. That's too bad, cuz most of the folks are pretty o.k. Yep there are some 'special folks' ( like those that anchor in the bb area), but as a whole we're o.k.
Thanks Pilar, I wasn't trying to ruffle your feathers, I just don't enjoy unfair generalizations. I especially agree that it's a problem on the water, not the town. Many people from many places travel here, just like any other place with LOTS of fish ( Tillamook, Blue Creek, Lewis RIver, PC at the point etc....). Just a mattter of the right attitude towards "combat fishing" It stinks, but with the Columbia closed for salmon and semi- sturgeon retention, this throws the focus towards a few spots with springers now. Everyone should be able to enjoy fresh springers !
Tundra III- Not unchilled, just defending mom and pops homestead graemlins/hearton.gif My sense of humor is also well intact.. I might even purchase a shirt if the front was like a chalkboard and you could fill in the blank to apply wherever there are crowds. graemlins/eek13.gif
Fishing report from May 1 , 3:30 to dark :
Pressure is mounting  (big surprise), and the fish are getting nervous. Did someone say shad ? :hoboy: Better bites in the afternoon and evenings, especially around tide change. Doesn't seem to matter which tide, as long as it's changing or an hour either way. Seems that those in a little shallower water are scoring fish, but the trollers seem to be evening up the score in the early am hours. The bankies are consistantly getting their share also. Noticed a seal working the mouth of the Clack heavily, which seemed to shut the bite off with a switch. Prawns and kwikies are getting the most grabs, with the alvins etc.. close behind. Pink seems to be the best prawn color with some blade or spin glo close by.
Peace and good fishing.....

I fished the O.C. today and had a ball. Yes, there is some rude people out there but overall most people are great. You can't beat the fishing. There are a few guides out there that need to learn some ettiquette on backtrolling but if your going to fish this area you just expect this behavior and show a lot of patience.
