As a fisherman..and I use the term very lose...I have fish now for springs every Wednesday and Saturday for the past month & and half...can I catch one ...NO....and when I am out...I see a catch ratio for boats at about 1 fish per 40-50 boats...After being on the Will in OC yesterday..I am ready to just leave my boat at Sportcraft...it and all the thosands of dollars worth of gear will be free to anyone...not really but how I feel..Is this just me or are there others out there that have had just a stinker of a time so far....think I am going to stay away from fishing for the next two weeks to reflect on my lack of performace...

I think there are plenty of us.

I have taken all the salmon gear out of the boat, and am heading for the mountains.

I understand whay you are saying. I fish a spot on the willimatte in a hog line. Every time I go out the same guys are there. I ask how the fishing is, they say something like this "real slow, have one in the box from this morning and missed a couple of take downs" What! that dosen't sound slow, that sound very good! But, after more talk I find they have been there sence 6:00am and it now 4:00pm! Bottom line they put in long long hours, all day, day after day. A couple weeks ago a guy said he already had 11 fish. He fishes 12 hours a day 5 days a week!

Well being a bankie,
My friends and I haven't had any luck yet either. We have watched people around us catch them but we have struck out. I am hoping my luck will change down on the coast or over on the clack.

You have to keep pluggin away, or find a good luck charm. I've gone several times this year with a friend and nothing. Another guy from out of town joined us this weekend, he caught a keeper Sturgeon Sat. while the rest of us caught shakers. Went out Sunday, we all got one clipped Salmon and a native for good measure. Right place, right time.

A fisherman is on optimist so get your complaining out of your system and get back out there!!

Keep the faith!! Hookem is telling it like it is. Sure there are hot days when even a doughball like me can hook fish, but typically, you put in a lot of hours for your fish. Years of experience can help the catch ratio, but early on its "pay your dues"

P.S. Here's a secret to shorten the time between fish. Shhh! Tie off to FishinMission's anchor rope. (Don't spread this sure fire trick around)

You need to go for the relaxation. Bring food and things to do. I've been out a dozen times and Ramstrong put one in the boat sat. Me nothing!! :depressed: Went out Sunday with the kids and a sixteen year old guy from church, my pole went down and I handed it to the young man. Then we had to let it go due to the extra fin. Just go and have a good time and you will get one.

Early premature...fishing...YES..That is what it is...Before I went out & bought a driftboad and then sled this year..my bank days yield 10-1 over this boat fishing...its a having to high of an expecations with little boat fishing knowledge....just need to stay grounded on why I love fishing...its to relax and envision what Lewis & Clack must have seen on these water ways 200 years ago...The fish are to be the plus...I feel all better now I can justify my NON-CATCHING skills...think I will try again this Wednesday....

Do you have good equipment? If so I'll take it!!! Really, you just have to keep trying. Then one of these days you will be able to post "Finally!!!!!!".

I could catch springers on the columbia but I'll be darned if I could get one on the Willamette. "Finally" got one Sunday.

Keep trying, maybe go with a guide to build your confidence a little. Even if you don't get a fish you will learn some good tips on fishing. That or go with someone on this board that is always catching fish (so they claim).

just keep trying.

IF catching is you only motivation for going, then take up a new hobby............ Otherwise just hang in there. Try to pick your days if you can, build a network of fellow fisherman to exchange reports, then fish only when the odds are in your favor. Find one area or one technique and become an absolute expert at it, that will help no only in confidance but will up your catch. Stick in there, and remember every dog has his day............. Good luck

I am more than game if anyone wants to come along fishing, I have a very open mind, and if ya like to tell me everything I am doing wrong, I don't take offense to it.....I have a 22' open sled and its always just me in it...In fact I have been out with several guides and have been out with Jack Glass on the Sandy 2 times in the last 30-45 days...I have offset my work schedule so I have all Wed's off until 1pm....(The owner lets me do it, he knows I have a fishing problem)

Just remember: When you don't catch anything it's bad luck. When you can't keep them off the hook you attribute it to skill!

Resist the urge to ANCHOR..and TROLL to go and find them...remember my technique...4 oz....14 pulls...and cover the water. Someone mentioned tying off to my anchor line, but they were wrong.....I seldom anchor in the Willamette. You're better off to move around. Trust me!!

I think you would be making a big mistake by not going right now. I decided to swing by after work today to see if anybody was doing anything. I stayed for 15 minutes, I saw 6 hooked and 5 landed. 3 by anchored boats and 3 for boats backtrolling with divers and bait. Timing is everything.

Frustrated husband came back from fishing at Garbage Hole tonight. Frustrated because he didn't have sand shrimp and that was the ticket tonight. Saw 12-15 fish caught (five in the first 15 minutes) almost all on sand shrimp. 90% by back-trolling and 10% by anchor. Only one **** out tonight that decided to anchor in the back-trollers. You would think that with all the comments ( graemlins/icon_argue.gif ) he would have caught a clue. graemlins/idea.gif

D I N K is a bad word?

I echoed these same sentiments last night....check out the thread I posted called Snake bit. There is a lot of good info there that might, and I say MIGHT, help all of us in our position.

Our day is coming, I can feel it!!!!!

Let's see. I think I have fished Springers once or twice every year since moving to Oregon in 1989. Nada! This year I have 29 hours in - 26 on the Columbia and 3 on the Willamette. 20 from the bank, 9 from a boat. Nada! I did finally hook one my last time out (first hook-up on a Springer). Came unbuttoned (what Dave Johnson would call a 'miff'). graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Fishless,
Save your time and money, and go with a guide! Better yet, find a friend who is a killer and get them to take you fishing. If you can't find one, then try the guide. It can save years, literally. You would have to take a lot of guided trips to pay for your boat and gear.

Check my post on the "cost of fish" thread. We are lucky to live where we do. Netone, you will get the hang of it. Keep your spirit up and you will win. Once you break the ice and learn a few of the tricks.....your going to like it...Bigtime.

Don't give up! The good Springer fishing is still on it's way to the Oregon City area. Last year my best days were in May. May 7th I had 7 fish and the next day 5. It was pretty steady all the way through the month. With the prediction from the ODFW this year I think everyone got excited early and are now frustrated. Oooh, maybe the crowds will thin out and leave more fish for us.

yea, there are triks but good luck getting any one to tell you them. AS for the long hours, thats really not the key. I am bettting that the avg fish per hour is about 1 fish per 48 lure in water hours. BUT I have fished the Willamette for 3 years and have yet to catch a springer, shoe, or plastic bag. Then there is the guy who pulls up at 5pm and has 2 fish by 6:30, and i have been there all day .
As far as i can see it if you want to catch salmon go to fred myer, there simply are not enough fish to sastify the below avg angler. Figuring there are 2+million anglers in this state and the only river available to 95% of them is the willamette with 65k total salmon, them odds are YOU WONT CATCH a fish.
Those who that can consistantly catch have some significant advantage even if they dont know they do. Its clean equip, special scent, depth control, electric fields, or low frequency vibration, or vodoo, but regardless there is somthing out there that allows some to catch fish and other to not. Putting in extra effot wont get you anywhere!! If you do it wrong all the time you just wont catch fish, and doing it wrong for Thousnads of hours will still be...Wrong: and you wont catch spit, just like me.

Jeez! Such discouragement. Guess I feel luckier than ever now that I am reading this stuff. Old Red Sled is right to a point. Fishing at the RIGHT time can compensate alot for hours of unproductive time. How does one know when to fish? Well, the tides (in or out can be right depending on the method), the barametric pressure, the PRESENCE of fish. Lots of factors are involved with all the right presentations and techniques. And luck! Some are lucky. But the lucky guys are ones that are there at the right times, too.

Rig two rods. When one needs changing, put the other one in. It can significantly increase your total fish time.

Must be alot of folks on this looking forward to shad fishing, eh?

Tight lines!!

By making this post it gave me what I needed, I know I am not alone and it feels good to vent sometimes...I love fishing as we all do...but the spirt in all of us requires a win now & then...as my wife told me the other day...sure glad we don't have to depend on your fishing to feed us...well I am too, it would really take the fun out of it...Hope to see some of ya out on the river...

Thats why its called fishing and not called catching guys & gals!
Fishing is like a vacation to reno
if you go into it thinking you will "score" big everytime you will most often come away disapointed. If you go out for the day fishing with your son..daughter...wife..or a fishing buddy with the mindset of having a great day on the river together to talk, share stories or just bum away the day and happen to catch a fish or two you will enjoy ever trip out and come home from some trips extremely elated when you bring home a fish. Go fishing and enjoy yourself.
As for the "cost" of fishing, I go fishing with my son and my sister we spend the day talking and laughing if we spend an average of 5 hrs a trip<on the average thats a low figure> thats 300 minutes of doing what we love to do not to mention all the hrs that we talk about our trips before and after we go enjoying every minute!
View your trips out as good fellowship and a learning experience where you just happen to be fishing!
Good luck to everyone!

Netone, I've been fishing the OC area since 1983 and still have'nt caught one anchored. Finally in 1999 I finally caught my own springer. Oh, I've had friends hand off their poles to me and such, but to actually catch one on my pole, with my rig that I tied myself, what a feeling! Hang in there buddy, its worth it, believe me. For me, its all about trolling. Anchors are for when your motor quits and your being sucked out to sea. Just kidding.
