After all the time, the boat, the gear, gas and wear on equipment I figure my 40#s of springer were around $150-$200/lb. The real question is would I have spent this knowing the season would have been like it was. ya I would have  . This salmon fishing is more expensive than a good drug habit would be

I try to think in terms of the long run and the price of entertainment. Yeah, I bought a lot of gear but I'm set for next year and some of it I will use for fall fishing. I gained a bunch of experience. I met some good folks. I know things I will use on the big river for summer steelhead.
Besides, have you priced some other forms of adult entertainment recently?   Jeez.

Yeah, I can't put a price on it. I know that I spent at least over $250 for my one and only fish this year. I only crackered two off so not really a good year. I did have fun though. and thanks to F-4 met some really great people.

My brother and I landed three plunking on Sunday, bam, bam, bam, all native. Lost three others afterwards, and he only took one home prior to that, me none. So he must have paid close to $200 for gas, new rod, and bait for that one fish, and I gas I'm going to have to transfer my bill onto the winter steelhead still left in the fridge, start a new tally for all of the Cascade bound fish. They aren't even going to be worth a buck a pound when I get through with them.

If it's only $150-$200 a lb I'd consider that cheap!!! I quit figurin' the price per lb a long time ago.....don't want to know how much I spend on my addiction!!!
Good luck and tight line, Jeff

How can you put a price on fishing? Spending some quality time with family, friends, or sometimes, just being by yourself. To me, the fish are just a bonus. Don't get me wrong, I love to catch fish and even manage to find a dumb one now and then. It is just not the only reason to go.
If you want to talk expensive, compare fishing to a pair of the good seats for the upcoming Eagles concert. $135.00 a seat. I think I paid about $5.00 or $6.00 a seat the last time I saw them live back in the late seventies. And they are still playing the same songs.

I spent at least $200.00 on gas alone, not counting the hot new colors of kwikfish that I never used(silver and chartesue on both ends only way to go) but they do look good in my tackle box and you never know so maybe another $50.00 there, new line #30.00.But it was worth every penny to catch my 5 keepers and watch my buddy's get there's two of them have never caught a Salmon.I'd do it again in a heartbeat.I hope they reopen it if not I've still had a great season.

Too funny, this post had crossed my mind yesterday when I was considering how empty the launch at Camas was and how quiet it was at Jimbo's.
For me, let's see...
2 reels filled with new line - $60
Some new lead - $10
Herring, Sardines, and Prawns - $30
New Kwikies and thread - $20
Gas and Oil for Boat - $100
Season Launch Pass - $35
Washington and Oregon Fishing licenses - $90
Food and goodies to eat - $50
Catchiing 3 beautiful Springers and sharing time with family and friends... PRICELESS.
Yeah I wish it was still on, but even had it only been a week long, I would do it all over again.

Lets see.... 12 salmon fishing trips so far, 5 clipped fin fish landed , 2 short line releases after throwing the hook, 0 finned fish seen...Mostly in my boat but several trips in others ...Launch fees, gas, license, tag, bait, beverages, food, new tackle, continued depreciation on my gear, lost time at the ranch for sorely needed chores...NAH; I'm not gonna keep track of the expense but its been worth it and it ain't over yet! For my third year salmon fishing its been my best so far. I will be fishing springers up till June, then one month to work on my new garage(2-story,1600 sq. ft.!) Then its off to Nehalem Bay for summer chinook. When that run is done, the columbia opens for fall chinook and thats where I will be. I got 10 salmon total last year and I want to get 20 or better this year. Now that I have my own boat I will fish as often as the wife lets me and we'll see how it goes... I want to thank everybody on this board that posts info because I have learned a lot about salmon fishing and wouldn't be catching any if I didn't apply what others have already found out and shared. Jennie, you rock!!!

Where did all you guys fish for springers before last year? The dogwoods are just out(old timers used to say this is when you want to fish for springers) GO FISH!! It's far from over just find that old spot and go! it's just the big river that's closed.

You guys all were spoiled last year in the Columbia.
While you were knocking yourselves out hoping for the fish to come we spanked them in the Willamette.
If it isn't happening where you'd like it to be, look at your alternatives.
The Willamette has been loaded with fish for the last month and a half....sorry you missed out!!

How about a little comparitive analysis to put this all in perspective. Why I should not complain
about how much a springer costs in Oregon: I'll go to Alaska and get a boatload of them!
I don't want to fly red-eye and have to get an expensive room in Anchorage so I can fork out 1200 for a seat on the plane. It takes about 40 hours of fishing time to catch one Kenai River Chinook. Thats five days of food and lodging. Have to have a car to get around. Got to buy that licence. Oh, I am such a good fisherman that I won't need a guide. So it now becomes over 50-50 that I won't get one fish and will need to come back next year. What do you mean I can only have 5
chinooks a year up here? Have to complain as I don't want anyone to know I haven't even seen one caught, let alone admit I haven't caught one.
I wouldn't trade the last week in April on the Willamette for the entire month of May or June on the Kenai. And a good day at Buoy 10 will match "most" of what Alaska has to offer most of the time. Our fish are cheap if you really want to compare. Hey, Jen.....what do you think?
