I am confused by the official numbers concerning clipped vs unclipped fish. The returns are an estimate, the catch is an estimate, and the planning for future sportfishing quotas is an estimate. Would it not be more efficient to ask fishers to put released fish on the tag to gain more accurate information? Do you think the asking for this information will compromise your fishing experience? Most people I know release fish that are not acceptable by law but some do keep them, I'm sure. Would you mind if the state asked for information on the unclipped fish you released?

OK, so far I've talked to 4 boats with a catch so far this year boated of 23 and released 19. This does not come close to the ratio given by the State estimates.

Refer to "where is the springers at?" thread for finclip info.
Released fish are estimated using statistical information collected at boat ramps by fish checkers and applied to a model that takes into account everything from tides to weather and that has decades of fisheries to be based on. Tag information is to little to late for in season fishery management.
