Just curious if anyone knows about the Navy (??) ship berthed at the head of the Multnomah Channel, just east of Fred's Marina. It's been there for quite a while, and although I have seen people working on it, I have never stopped to ask what kind of vessel it is. It certainly is wierd looking. Any ideas?

Have a picture of it? I haven't been over there so I haven't had a look. I know there's an old LST (Tank Landing Ship) moored in scappoose bay next to the stern wheeler. Don't know whats upstream though.

Well i am in the navy and i do not think i have sceen this ship, i guess i will have to drive over and see it. I am a navy recruiter from vancouver stationed here in vancouver finally. If i make it over there this week i will let you know what it is...
I don't know anything about the ship, but it was moored in the Portland harbor for years until it moved a couple weeks ago. It could be just a cost of moorage thing.

If it is the one that used to be under the St Johns bridge. It is an old transport ship that some guys are restoring. We did a walk through of it one day, they are trying to get everything back in original condition. The type of ship that one is was designed to be disposable, one time use.

The one in Scapoose is the USS Washtenaw County LST 1166, Vietnam era. http://www.pe.net/~rc/ is a good link on where it's been, etc. I think
that restoration effort might be in trouble....
LST 713 is WWII 1942-45. I noticed that they hang a plaque out when they're
working on it. It has the years and I think service awards.

A quick thanks to all of you who responded to my inquiry re: #713. I thought an LST was much larger, but then again, I was never in the Navy!
Looks like quite a project!
