Here is the story....I just "stole" a Calcutta 400 (it was strapped on a 1000 series 1307 Lami SPINNING rod!! )..and need a home (rod) for it!! I guess it will be used mostly for trolling....with maybe some 'nooks in rivers.....
What rod would you strap this reel onto???? I'm thinking a 1085, or 1023....but would LOVE some input!!!
Thanks,
Frank

If you are going to use it for trolling, and primarily fishing from a boat, I like the Loomis HSR 982. Works great when using divers also.

St. Croix AC80H for divers or AC80M for mag warts or K13s flat lined.

HS 1023c Rainshadow blank... 8'6" 12-25# SicTi guides, 2 pcs. a great rod, very similar action to the 982 but in a two piece version. Great blank for a fraction of the price..
Wonderful diver rod, backbounce rod, kwikie rod.. a great all around salmon rod..
I have six with matching Calcutta 400 and love them.
PS
I used to fish the 981 from Loomis and then the 965 from Rainshadow, but this rod is a better all around rod.

....or better yet a Lamiglas Cert. Pro in X80MBCT #12-25. They have 13 Fuji 'concept guides' and are a balanced and asthetic work of art. I have three setups like this with Calcutta 400's.

Its the nicest salmon combo I have ever used.

If the Calcutta was a 200 or 250 I'd agree with the HSR982 (have 2 and love them for spinners, herring, bait divers, small Kwikfish, Mag Warts, etc.), but with the 400 I'd go for a HSR 983. The 983 makes a very good big diver rod for Buoy 10, handles the bigger Kwikfish, can be used for heavier weights (8 - 12 ounces) when trolling the ocean or hard running tides and is an excellent keeper sturgeon rod. The 983 can also handle everything the 982 can although its tough to read the tip on small spinners. Bottom line: The 400 gives you more capacity so why not take advantage?
