a friend of mine is offering to loan me his trolling motor. The shaft is adjustable from 30 to 35 inches. The handle to conrol the motor is 8 inches long. Do you think the length is going to be long enough for a 16 fr. driftboat and would there be anyway to lengthen the control handle? I'm just going to use it on Crane Prarie a few times. If handle can't be modified how much of a pain is it going to be to squat in the back next to the transom and steer from there?

i don't know about getting the motor deeper but you can buy an extension handle at bimart that should let you sit in the middle of the boat. if you can't hit the water properly with the motor off the back of the boat, try moving it to the side. it'll kick the boat off to one side, but it beats rowing i guess.

What brand and model is the trolling motor?

with 35 inches - you may need stand/sit in back anyway as you'll need bring the back transom down to keep the prop in the water. Should work OK, but the prop may come out of the water occassionally when you get waves or shift weight forward.
On mine I use a 42" shaft and an extension handle - seems to work good. I only have the shaft extended about 38-39" though. At about 35 the prop come out occassionally depending on waves and loading.
