Too much debris in the water to take my boat out Saturday, so I headed for the 'Bankie Beaches' of the lower Columbia. What a day it was!!!! Within my small 100yd. stretch of beach, the action was constant. Chinooks and steelhead lying in the sand; bells goin' off and fishin' clans engaged in group netting jobs. I was impressed. It was without a doubt, the most springer action I have seen all season. This little beach seemed to be blessed with fish. All that was needed was the venerable chartreuse or watermelon spin n glo, and you were in business. I witnessed and estimated 40-50 take downs in a 5 hour period.
The oddity of oddities was that the boaters above and the boaters below sat skunkin' dead for the entire day. The bank held the magic.
...and of course, with my flawed "boater mantality", the next day, I loaded my girls in the boat and spent 8 hours drowning herring and flatfish without a bite....cause, that's just what I do. :hoboy:

Thats the way its been for a few weeks out around claskinine. Especially on the WA. side. I've spent a little time out there too, in a boat, and got SQUAT. Two takedowns in 14 hours or so while the bankers were nailin em. No 5 to 1 ratio there by golly!

I'm agoin' plunkin' at Sauvie Island on Tuesday. Anybody recommendations on spin-n-glo color and scent? I was originally thinking something with chartreuse and an application of herring smelly jelly. Also, is yarn a good idea?
Thanks,
Nipper

I've been trying to tell everyone to get out of the boats and pound sand for the last few weeks. My freezer is overflowing with fish. I'm the most popular guy on the block right now handing steaks out to the neighbors. Being at work right now is almost painful because of all the fish we're knocking down this year. Heck, I burned up my vaccuum packer a couple nights ago and had to get a new one. What an awful problem to have, huh? :hoboy:

Thanks for the advice Kyle-fucious!
I fished several fastwater sweetspots at 8 to 12 ft. Sunday with nada...just can't consistantly figure em this year. How can there be that many fish showing downstream and it remains so dead jus 6 miles up current???There is no self respecting springer that will refuse my green tipped special in the fast water...well, I thought there wasn't. :depressed:
...and I just can't bring myself to sit in a boat dumping a S n G overboard. It's just wrong.
Fishon: The action has been near Prescott beach, just upstream from Rainier.

What is the right dropper length to use right now? What type/size hook? And what is it about the bank? You can do that well plunking the same gear out of a boat too...can't you? graemlins/eek13.gif

Just a guess, but I think the reason it doesn't work as good out of a boat is because of the angle of the line in relation to the bottom. I only run two spin-n-glos about 30" apart. The bottom one I run out of a slider like you would do for sturgeon fishing. I would guess that this glo is running less than an inch or two off the bottom and the second one is maybe only an inch or two up and sideways from the first one. I've always ran a dropper off a spreader with anywhere from a 12"-24" dropper and I wasn't having the success like I'm having this year running them closer to the bottom. It is apparent to me that those chinook are hugging the bottom and swimming close to shore. It might have something to do with the water flows and temps this year. I'm not sure.
Anyways it seems to working well and I'll keep riding the wave until it ends.

Good questions Jay and good insight Trick. Maybe hunkering that lure down close to the bottom would be helpful in these conditions.
I sure hate to see all those shiney fish sneak by us to those "upstream fellers". This 'teacher' may need to go back to 'fishin' school.

Trick: So the weight is snapped right on the slider right? What about the hooks, with yarn?
graemlins/1zhelp.gif I'm a plunking cracker.
Definitely got schooled last weekend, and my training is not get complete.
Although we did get some grabs on kwikfish while anchored in 4.5-5.5" of water while the rest of our line had even less action.

Jay, The Bankie Spankie legacy continues today, also. Reliable word has it that a handful of schoolboys fishing off of the the Warrior Rock beach, landed several 'dozen' today as the troll fleet watched in amazement, only hooking 'one' fish.
I was also told that these guys ran several fish over to their rigs on the washington side and returned to fish some more! My pals anchored below them in 6 feet of water, fishin' the same style and got nuttin' honey!

Yeah, the weight is snapped onto the slider. I use a 3/0 red single hook with two or three beads and then a Spin-n-glo. I don't use yarn, just a good sharp, high quaility hook like Owner, Daiichi or Gamakatsu...don't cut corners with hooks, springers are worth the extra cash.
Use scent, Mikes gel scent in herring flavor has been the "love juice" that I've been using. Find some size 2 or 4 gold (shiny) with the red top glos. Good luck though...Fishermans and Joes had none when I checked today.
Take some days off from work now and fish, it sounds like it's all over on Sunday. :depressed:
With the high flow use at least 8 oz or 10 oz weights, especially if your fishing in close quarters.
Good luck!

Hogtide,I am one of those school boys you were refering to off of warrior rock tuesday and if you think a person 32 years old is a school boy then you must be lucky to still get in the boat.I too was one of the trollers out there monday and got tired of seeing them catch fish on the bank while getting skunked in the boat.If you cant beat them join them.I can assure you the fish there that were kept were tagged and the washington fisherman all had oregon tags.I personally hooked 10 fish in five hours and lost seven landing three of them and releasing one due to having to use twelve ounces of lead. Another guy fishing there released five natives before getting his first hatchery.there were even three hatchery's they released because of there size,we did hook alot of fish there but there were far more fish lost than were landed.they are catching them all up and down the beaches right now the secret is to hit 16' of water double spinglow set-up and herring scent GOODLUCK

Trick,
These are really good tips. I haven't fished springers much, but I do have all the right gear and tackle. I was wondering if you have a picture or drawing of your double spin-n-glo setup? Also , besides herring scent, can you use bait like shrimp or cured eggs tied to the hooks? thanks for any help. Tom
