How's that for convenience? Anyone want to caravan to Medford or Bend to get your tank replaced with one that you can get refilled? :hoboy:

I heard (and am praying it's true) you can take your old tank to one of those setups where they swap a full tank for your empty one and do the swap even though you have an outdated tank. I heard it costs $20 but you end up with a full tank of propane, too.

Home Depot has the 4 lb cylinders for $22.98 each. If you exchange your old ones, you get $3.00 off. Anyone know how much to retrofit an old cylinder?

GI Joes will swap it with a full tank for $19.99.... for the BBQ size (20lb i think is what its rated)

Learned a bit about this myself this weekend, as my tank ran dry just prior to dropping some cod filets into the bubbling oil....

Just as an FYI, if your tank has a triangular on / off knob, you should okay to refill. Mine did not....

You can take it to Hillsboro on TV HWY just across from Witch Hazel road is a Gas Connections store and they can do the retrofit for you, I think it's 24 dollars. and they will recert your tank also. If your tank is full it takes them longer. cause the have to empty it.

Also if you have a horizontal tank NO Change is required except getting a sticker on it which costs 5 dollars to say it is exempt.

GI's joes had tanks on sale for 22 dollars this last weekend.

Rimshot,
Your address is listed Portland. There is a Gas Connection in Portland @ SE 181st & Division. They can convert your tank if you want. Or they will sell you a new one & Fill it. They can also dispose of your old tank w/o charge. Phone them and get their prices to see which way is less expensive. It may be less expensive to go to Home Depot or GI Joe if you have to change tanks, as I understand you would have to drop it off at a disposal site due to the combustion risk of the tank.

I went to the state fire marshal site and the links didn't work. Is it true if you have tanks that are horizontal tanks like my camper. You don;t have to worry about the exchange? I have special brackets that are welded on my tank to hold it in place! :depressed:

I checked with the Gas Connection on SE 82nd, and was told it would cost $36 for a new valve and re-certification of your old tank. Bi-Mart sells brand new 5 gal. tanks for $22.98 right now. As I see it, a new one will be cheaper than a new valve on an old tank.

During the last year all my tanks(7)5 gallon got emtied. I took them to Wal-Mart and did the exchange thing for 12.99 and I got to bring home a full tank. They were AmeraGas brand. Be careful and not do it with the Rinho Exchange Tanks. They couldn't be refilled. I had a couple of those and had to trade them back in for full ones. Rinho's didn't come from Wallys.

I have taken the exchanged tanks to the gas refill place, AmeraGas, and they refilled them for the normal price.

Don't see any problem doing it that way unless Oregon has a different law.

ThickNThin,

My understanding is you are correct. Your tanks are fine.

Thanks Moby...I was pretty sure that horizontal tanks didn't apply to the new regs

I was aware of the new propane tank regulation going into effect earlier this month. However, I didn't pay much attention to it after reading if your tank was produced after 1999(I think?) it would have the correct valve assembly. Having bought my tank 6-8 months ago i knew I was fine. WRONG! I went to fill my tank last time out fishing and low and behold it had the old style valve on it! So, needless to say I'm a little irritated. What are my options? I remember reading something about an exchange or a retrofit. Has anyone done this? I need to do something in the next 2 days and I really hope it's not buying a new tank  ! Can someone fill me in on the specifics? Thanks a bunch

$12.99 is the best price yet. I'll take my next empty to WalMart. I paid $19.99 at GI Joes for a full AmeriGas bottle in exchange for my old style empty.

I called the State Fire Marshall's office. They expect to announce an exchange date for Salem later this week and also expect future exchanges closer to Portland. I'll call again later this week and will post what I learn.

Hey SJP,

What Home Depot did you go to that had 4lb tanks for $22.98?

Ha Rim

I have an Rv Park in Salem and we sell propane gas and tanks . But lets talk about your problem Tanks made after Oct 1998 must have the OPD Value, that is a MUST. I have a sheet that shows the Fed regs. If you want I can mail you one.

Bottom Line Take it back and get your money back.
The fine for selling a tank without OPD is $10000.

May I ask ho you got it from?
