The best indicator of when the springers are waiting to be caught is a red dogwood tree in my yard. When the blossoms are about 3/4 their full shape is when to hit the Willamette. I know this sounds even less credible than BOE's post that black mouth labs make the best retrievers as this is a sure sign of their intelligence. But you just
watch and see what happens late this week. The tree sure has a good record. What the heck, if we go and don't do well the wife can blame the tree
instead of me.......Now who has heard of a tree that fibs?

OH MY...have you been talking to frances at NSIA?? She and I had a great laugh the other day over the dogwood! Coincidence?? Yep...but fun none the less...have had dogwoods in full bloom here for about 1.5 weeks...bring them bad boys on...I'm ready!

Bigshark - you sure have twisted that comment around, when I only commented on what somebody else said

And I use my Asaleas  to tell when springer fishing is best. Most of my springer pictures are in front of blooming asaleas.

Yep, Dogwoods in bloom and affordable artichokes in the grocery store = springer time.

On the upper Rogue it is when the Angel Wings appear on Mt. Mclaughlin (Pitt) near Medford.

The snow melts to a point that the wings appear on the North side and it means the fish are in the upper river in good numbers.

Legend has it the Indians used this barometer for ages and it has worked for me for years.

Red Dogwoods .. for springers. Pussywillow for smelt and the Columbia river sturgeon slaughter.

Chanterelles mean it's time to get that T-bay hog.

Are there any others?

Aw schucks BOE, I guess it's time to fess up to taking a little liberty on the lab comment. No doubt other plants don't fib much either. Just got back from the Oly Pen and I think the little tree and its friends do a good job on predicting
springer fishing up there as well. Folks we visited caught three yesterday from the bank and all out of the same hole. We were late so gave them a ring on the cell about 4:30pm from Aberdeen and they said they would go back-fishing and meet us in Forks about 7pm at the resturant. Gave them a call when we hit Forks and they said come on out to the house. Three fish....low teens I'd guess....using sandshrimp tails. Story of my life...should of been there. :hoboy: Couldn't stay as had to be in Seattle this afternoon.

If the grass in my yard gets over a foot tall then its springer season in full swing! Time to get the neighbors son to mow the yard
