I just took off my old trusty 8hp merc. about 1000 hrs on the old girl. I need to remove the lower unit and look it over. I got the 3 bolts off, but am stuck there. Any help?? I have already replaced her with a new one, but wanted to get the motor up to grade for a spare. I did a ifish search, but couldn't find any info.

You'll need to remove the shift linkage. There is a 1" hole with a rubber cover that is about halfway up the side of the center housing. If you want drawings with part numbers and prices go the mercury's parts express. Here is the link

I've got an odler 9.8 Merc and recently pulled the bottom end to replace a shift shaft bushing and water pump impeller; those are the two cheap little parts you should automatically replace when you pull the bottom end. The impeller is the heart of your cooling system and the bushing seals the gear lube reservour. I think U can get both parts for under $15.

If memory serves, you should be able to crack the bottom end after pulling the bolts from underneath, and the nut just above the lower unit at the front of the unit. Put in in neutral before you drop the bottom end..makes reassembly a little easier.

Anyone know who is good with "skag" repair other than a boat dealership?

Thanks,

Rick
