going to fish wickiup for the trout opener for the first time. Does anyone have any experience with this lake, and if so what rapalas work the best and @ what times. Have always fished simtustus for the opener but want to try something new this year. Oh BTW tageting browns and bows of the large variety. Any help graemlins/1zhelp.gif graemlins/1zhelp.gif would be most appreciated.
thanks in advance.

I haven't shopped for them in a long time, but we
have had success using broken back plugs in either
rainbow trout colors or dark browns and yellow to
match the tui chub. Troll slow early and late when
the sun is off the water. Deep if the water is flat and you can fish shallower if there is chop.
We always concentrated on points with close access
to deeper water. Keep all the bass you may hook.
Good luck

We have always had our best fishing very early in the morning...last year we hooked into 2 browns over 25" and each was right at first light...
Troll the sides of the Davis Arm with a solid rapala (my partner was fishing the broken back ones w/o any hits). I was actually trolling with my sportjet, not the kicker, both times (it was damn cold outside the cabin) so I was trolling faster than the rest of the boats...maybe speed was the key as they weren't catchin at all.
Outside of the arm, but still in the channel, we caught several bows...one over 20"...
Good luck and I will probably see you there the 27th!

Anybody know any good books on fishing for Browns? I have been hitting them in Montana with flies only, but their behavior is different than most other trout so I wanted some more info on them.
also how big a rapala do you go?

MM,
We always leave the boat on the shore when camping up there and have never had any problem. Good luck on the opener.

As for size 5”-7” Rapps.

What's the campground situation opening weekend? Will I be able to get a spot at 7pm on the Friday night before? Are there reservations? Which campground can I beach the boat at? This sounds likae a blast. We need to have a Saturday get together for the I-fishers to swap stories and beers. Anyone want to set it up?

I found brown fishing with rapalas is not time of day, but water clarity. Browns at Wickiup and other central Ore. lakes are a ambush species in shallow water. It is much easier to hunt when prey can't see you coming. Most active times are evening near sunset to one hour after.(legal limit). Browns are hungry after resting during the day. 2nd is morning as they are leaving shallow water(reeds and brush patches) headed to deep water. 3rd during the day in deep water or shallows when thunderstorms or cloudy.
What I use are floating rapalas in 8-12' water, speed 3-5 mph, pulsing rod, for the Wickiup jerk. Broken backs seem to work better with 10-15' water. Color is matching the different bait fish in for different sections of the lake. Colors I like are perch, rainbow, silver, and gold, sizes 7 to 18 with 9 to 13 working the best.
Like to get together for a mass lake sweep or a kokanee buzz bomb feast.

Guys, take a look on the other board and you will find that a bunch of us are going ot meet at CP on opening weekend. Hopefully we will learn from each other and have a great time. We have been talking about catching anything from trout to bass and all sounds fun. The post is in the Bass and Panfish section and has a lot of interest shown. Maybe we can all end up in the same campground.
Fallriver guy is one of the locals to that area and he sounds willing to help us newbees figure out how to catch fish there.

thanks for the info guys. Tag we'll be in space 20 @ the rv park, blue TJ. Have you had any problems in the past with vandels? We would like to leave the boat at the shore and not have to unhook the motorhome to launch every morning.{wife likes to sleep in}.

Past experience says that gull point campground will be full by 7 pm Friday and they only have 2 sites that are reservable with those being group sites. You may call Twin lakes resort and see if they have any sites still available in their campground. They make reservations for that one. There is also a campground towards the head of the Davis arm of Wickiup that you access before you reach the the cut off road for wickiup/crane prairie. That one seems to be about the last one to fill on the weekends. Good Luck to you !!!
