View Full Version : Folding down the canvass top

I have encountered a problem when it comes time to put the top down when fishing. If I fold it forward, it does not quite reach the top of the windshield, so it blocks the windshield. If I fold it astern, it does not reach the splashwell, causing it to rest in valuable fishing space.

Anyone with a similar problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Might try looking in Cabela's or at a boat shop for some slider rails. These mount to your boat and have sliding brackets that fit in the rails and mount to your top supports. Kind of clumsy, but would allow the whole thing to slide. Try to get good ones, many are cheap plastic junk. Good luck.

With my boat, the top will roll up and stay straight up over head. It's a little tougher getting from stern to bow while fighting a fish, but that is what works best for me.

I have the same condition. I put straps around the canopy so it is as compact as possible, then jam some towel-s***** at either side so it will rest at the top of the windshield.

Usually, it just rests on top of the depthfinder. If the top is down, I prefer to stand up while driving anyway. I can see a lot better, and eat more bugs.

 Yikes, the nasty-filter is working overtime.
Towel "sections" then - RAGS . I'm sorry I said

Dang, I guess my boat was designed right! When I fold my top up it nests along the top of the windshield, out of the way and secure! Love my Alumaweld Intruder!

Iam with you Pete. Mine lays along the top of the wind shield and usually lays there 365 days a year. I will put it up in a constant rain but my boat is only a 16 footer so with it up it doe's not leave me a lot of room to move around with those big fall nooks.
If you ever fish in Troutmysters boat you can borrow my moron friend to block the wind..hee hee hee, right Ron ?

I would HOPE that when you tack those extra zeroes on the price tag, the canopy fits better! Oh, well!

Anyone else have a boat that is older than they are?

It's a '58, I'm a '59.

My boat has 2 cleats that sit a couple feet back from the others. When I take the top down, I unscrew the front and move the top to the back and screw it back in. The top then lays on the back of the boat out of the way. You may want to look into something like that.

I second trout, myster's suggestion. The sliding rails would solve your problem for a reasonable price.

Cagey had a good idea for wind blockage. Another idea for the top that's in the way is to leave it up when you head home. Increase your velocity to around 70mph and, unless the top is made for towing, your problems should be over (at least as to where to put the top!).
