Looking to get information on fishability up at Barney Reservoir from someone whose made it in. Trying to get in from the Yamhill side sounded like it was possible and fun! Tubing or a canoe possible and productive? Snow a problem still? What about dragging Woolly's or leeches? Spinner or wedding rings? Is it a keeper fishery? What do you know.........
Thanks
John

I've never fished Barney Reservoir but I hunt often in that area. I haven't been in there this spring but I seriously doubt you'll have any problem w/snow. I'm pretty certain it's catch-n-release only.

John,
Yes, Yes and No,
Yes it is open, yes, drag wooly boogers, etc... I think the restriction is no bait, and you can't keep them, and I hear it is getting pretty good again since they raised the dam level.
Access is open and has been for a while. Also you can't run motors there. I have heard of a few drift boats on the lake, so your plumbed and canopied db will do great!!

Wow...this timing is incredible.
Just yesterday I was looking at an area map and saw Barney on it. Never noticed it before. I was actually thinking of bringing up a thread for information...
Anything besides stocked bows in here? What about the size? 1/2 of Hagg? 1/4?
Is the best access from Yamhill/Dayton or from Forest Grove?
Thanks, Tag

What I've been hearing is native cutthroats and bows in the lake. Naturally reproducing and some size to um.... I am still looking for someone that has driving in from the Yamhill side? Any info! How about a good map, where can I get a forestry map of this area? graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Toblerone...back in the old young and dumb days of my teens, friend and I fished it and there were some big bows in it then....I can't remember exactly how to get there but I believe my brother does (he hunts in that area and drives from Newberg)...

Believe that you can still get to Barney from both sides. Havent fished it in about 10 years, but the lake is famous for wormy fish. Small thin reddish worms, have talked to ODFW about them and the are resident is some lakes. Wont hurt you even if you eat them live, but kinda unappetising. When I kept fish I smoked them, the brine would kill the worms and I would just pull them out before smoking. Usually got most of them. Nice trout, just don't let the girls see you doing this. Don't know if raising the dam affected this or not, check it out if you keep any fish. Also, as this is a municipal water source, there was some talk of limiting access to the lake, you might check that also. Good luck

John, It is pretty easy to find. In the town of Yamhill there is a 90 corner on HW 47, head for the Flying M from the outside of the corner, that road will turn into Turner Creek. When you get to the turn off point for the Flying M (left across a bridge), don't take it, stay on the pavement and run it out until it goes to gravel. Now it gets tricky...stay on gravel until you get to Neverstill. No signs that say Neverstill, it is just the first "major" intersection you come to after you start descending a bit after the climb. Turn right and you are pretty much there. With the lake a bit higher(new dam) I think you can see it from Neverstill. There are enough people running around up there if you get lost, they might help you...if you got your banjo
If you end up at Camp Murphy, well you had a nice drive anyway, oh and you are still 25 miles from pavement! :hoboy:
I don't think worms are an issue in the fish becuase I think it is catch/release only. And you are right they are pretty much a self sustianing population, I don't think they are stocked. Unless it was by a fisherman years ago.
It use to be an off limits but they opened it up a few years ago.

Tagster, Yamhill is the answer, I don't think you can anywhere from dayton can you? :depressed: and Forest Grove is a few drainage systems away. My directions above are as direct as you get, unless you got a dirt bike and then I got a much better route for you
