Well, I see he's moving on to bigger and better things?? He was the reason I watched KATU news, I'll probably go back to KGW now. Wonder what the thinking was by the KATU management...it ain't broke, so let's fix it?

Sorry to see him go.

everyone has an opinion. Mine is that Grant was a pile of goo as a tv host. Just like the two guys ( i usually like their guests) who do the FSN outdoor show on sunday morning. Fluff fluff fluff. I'm sure as a person ,husband and father he is probably just as good as they come. Just get him off tube. If you want to find something about the outdoors in oregon, go to your local library

I'm out of the loop. Is he switching stations or leaving TV all together.

KATU is changing formats, and they don't see a need for the outdoor/environmental reporters.

I enjoyed watching Grant. I always watched KATU when I knew he was giving a report or story. He is the only newscaster that I have seen catch a fish and eat it too. (And get excited about it) His reports captured the outdoor spirit of a true Northwesterner with his camping vacations and love for the outdoors. I think as we continue to be more urban in focus, we lose sight of why this is such a great place to live. Its too bad and I will miss his reports.

I like his reports. His voice is something we have tried to parody for years. We read the article in the Oregonian this morning at breakfast and the whole family put on their best Grant McOmie voice wondering where we'd get our fluffy outdoor information now. Shame on KATU. Why don't they leave well enough alone.

SJP, that is not his voice. It belongs to Walter Cronkite, Grant just ripped it off knowing broadcast folks with a rich drawl will be noticed. Boring. I could name you several of those copy cats. How origanal? Not very. The Koin station has one of the worst offenders. He stole his voice from Charles Karult.

Methinks maybe Grant once gave away Cully's "secret spot" on a report once??

Our news channels are a joke anyway. All the local news formats are the same, same stories, same times, same time for weather, no differentiation except for the outdoors portion. Apparently being a little different didn't work for KATU so they got to change their format to be the same.

I get frustrated with the absolute nonsense that comes out of their mouths nearly every news cast, and Grant was one of the few reason I even put up with, so C'ya!!

Well I don't see the same way as you do Cully. Thats OK isn't it?.....I see it as he did more positive things like take the side of the sportsmen and do his best to show our activities in a positive light to those who would like to stop us from hunting or fishing. As for KATU....I suppose they want to brighten my day with more time spent on telling me why drug dealers, bad check writers, credit card thieves, and car thieves should be let OUT of jail to make ROOM for some poor devil that walked out to his car with his shotgun while a drugie was ripping his radio out. The neighbors wife was offended the guy was in his shorts and he even had a gun. He needs to be taught a lesson. So Grant....if you read this, thanks for your efforts.....they may not have pleased everyone, but it was your best effort and I found it a lightening of sprit to what the remainder of the broadcast would bring.
I felt, from time to time, I knew more about what you were talking about than you did, but not very often. I'll probably be one of the few to remember you as a school teacher who left the classroom to what you loved most....tell folks about the great outdoors. There will always be a seat in my boat or a spot in my duckblind for you. Thanks again.

Fine with me bigshark!. Like we all know, to each his own. For me, being old enough to remember Walter, Charles, Chet and David- gave me my fill of the "Voice". Broadcasting 101. I expect more than a roadside stop off hwy 26, and look ma I'm in a firewatch tower in the middle of nowhere. Outdoor informer- hardly. Captiolist at others expense- most likely

Double ditto Bigshark. Really liked his shows. Always stopped what I was doing when his voice came on the tube. Unlike Cully, I enjoyed the sound of Grants voice regardless of where he acquired it. If a show has anything to do with the Northwest
outdoors, I'm gonna watch it. The rest of the news is so depressing I dont let my son
watch it.

P.S. To berate a person that has just lost his job (a job which would be extremely
difficult to find again) is bad taste and bad karma.

I sure will miss Grant's Outdoor reports and Getaways. I especially liked his extended segments on the Saturday afternoon news show. With Grant gone from KATU, my opinion is that KATU wil now be just the same as all the other news channels, just plain YUK!!!! I don't see why they would drop the outdoor segments! This region is so intertwined with the outdoors, it only makes good sense to offer the viewers something that is part of so many peoples lives. It's no different to when KGW dropped Doug LaMear, or how the daily rag (Oregonian) is cutting back the Thurday Fishing Reports. I Will Never Understand!! graemlins/berry.gif

I also will miss Grants Segments. I think Bigshark said it best so no point in repeating everything.
If you go to KATU.com he has a message and his e-mail address listed if anyone wants to contact him. For that matter you can e-mail KATU and let them know they got rid of the only reason a lot of us watched KATU news.

24 on 48 off is the only one that seen the loss we have suffered with grant being let go,grant was the only link via tv. we had as fisher people with the general public.
Over the years I done many shows with grant and enjoyed all of them
I found grant to be easy to work with and an exellent fisher person

The Gov. wants to close fish hatcheries. Grant does a tv show, showing what a mistake that would be. All so allows some us to say on the show what a jerk the Gov. is. Two days later no more Grant. Hmmm!!! We need more like him, and we need him back, maybe on chanel 6.

Ironic isn't it Jerry? Another piece of irony. KATU is owned by a corporation named "Fisher Communications". Maybe they should change it to "Anti-Fisher". Sorry to see Grant go too.

oh, cully...how do you breath with your head stuck up your rear? (my opinion-just like your tub of goo slam on grant). grant was the last Portland-market TV outdoor feature reporter after LaMear left KGW. no matter how much fluff you thought he did or what voice-style you thought he stole, he was the only one doing outdoor segments on a regular basis. maybe the "whale-watching" segment wasn't your bag but he put fishing and hunting stories on the news when no one else would (unless it had to do with the enviromentalists angle). the new news director at KATU used to work at KGW several years ago. He's the guy who believes a helicopter is more important to covering a story than actual information. Personally, I think he ruined all our local news and wish he would fall back into the hole he crawled out of. but, back to my point...grant brought Oregon's diverse outdoor recreation to the public in a way that was unbiased and non-judgemental. there are a lot of people in this state that vote and have never been hunting, fishing, hiking, or exploring and grant's reports may have been their only exposure to those activities. he made it look fun and presented it as a part of the Oregon experience...ie:state support for our way of life. i worked in tv news (as a videographer)for nine years-started (not starred in)a recreation segment at the bend station in 1989, did fishing and hunting tips there also, before working in portland at an independent (at that time). i know what the obstacles are and the bs that you go through to get anything outdoors on the news that isn't "controversial". I would have loved to work with grant bringing the real Oregon to viewers every week. i wish the best to grant and hope that there will be a time in local tv news where the like of his services will once again be needed.

Grant McOmie was a guest speaker at the Chehalem (now Newberg) chapter of the Northwest Steelheaders. The first thing I noticed when he spoke was that he didn't have 'the voice'.

I was listenting intently, trying to figure out where the signature tones went, when he played a clip from one of his shows. There was 'the voice'!

He only does it for the television shows and then only when he's reading a script.

There's a little McOmie trivia fer ya ....

Personnaly, I will miss Grant's segment on KATU. Now I have a great reason to switch to another station. Of all the stupid decisions that KATU has made, this ranks right up there with the worst.

Grant is a gentleman, highly regarded, and dedicated to the thousands of outdoor enthusiasts who call the NW their home. Now what?

I emailed him this AM and wished him well. With his talents, he won't be out of a job very long...at least I hope not.

Thanks Grant!

I stand by my opinion. You all are welcome to yours. Mine is a non favorite. That never has stopped me and sure won't this time. I have been right before when others were wrong and visa versa. As far a Doug Lemear goes. It was the best thing KGW did in the sports dept. Unless it was a golf story, he had no clue. Grant will find another job-everyone does. Lemear retired I believe after his loss of occupation. In a 400.000 home. Not to shabby for his drone.

The next thing you will see is a story in the Oregonian that PBS (Channel 10) is dropping Steve Amen on Outdoor Oregon (Show name??).

I guess it's more important to see dead terrorists than the beautiful Northwest.

Cully....should there be a 'hagen-chewing, beer-swilling, burping redneck in his own beat-up drift boat doing a show??

I really don't mean to be insulting, but do you have a problem with the people, or the outdoor sports reporter in general? Jerry is right, Grant was the lone direct link for sportsmen to the general TV audience. I certainly hope someone else makes him an offer.

I for one always enjoyed Grants little part of the show, always stopped and watched, and I wish him the best in the future. Perhaps the Oregoian paper could use Grant. We need all the voices we can get to protect our sports peoples rights and our great outdoors, Thanks Grant!

To me this is just another sad reminder of the direction Oregon is headed! I greatly appreciate the job Grant has done. It is very sad that KATU can't see the value in our great outdoors!!!

The people that stated that Grant was the only media link to the out doors in our area were right on the money. We used to have Tom McCallister, Larry Shoenborn(sp) heck even Bill Monroe used to do more fishing related pieces. Is it possible that the guys making these decisions come from a place you need to drive 200 miles just to get to the great outdoors.

I would suggest all of us (except cully of course) e-mail our displesure to KATU, I'm going to.

TheRogue, in gereral the reason i don't like sportscasters is because they operate out of formula. Grant is not exception in my opinion and as a matter a fact worse because as stated several times ( by others also) he was contrived. He used his voice as bait. Bad move. He was and is not origanal. To me, that is boring. I am plenty active and to think of sitting down and watching a boring, contrived tv host really does not interest me. As we all know when given lemons- make lemonaid. Katu might just pull a rabbit out of there hat. If they don't, I could care less. Chewing, beer, burping and beat up driftboat. I don't chew, never drink while drifting, excuse myself after burping and yes a beat up drift boat is fine with me. Ever see the Cajun Cook before he died/ he was better then all the Julia's, Martha's, Capriels put together and he was no mammas boy.

Has anyone who may know Grant personally heard about any impending plans for his TV future? It might be that he already has a new spot lined up and we just haven't heard.

Just a thought.

Hey Kids It's all about the Money. These days if you can't bring in sponsors you will not have a show. How much do you think good video costs per minute ? In the 90's $1,000 a minute was the going rate. It's more now.Local origination TV is Dead in America because of the cost. When the cable franchises wiggled their way out of their commitments to the local governments the "news you didn't get anywhere else" ended.

What do you think was the longest running weekly Outdoor show in Oregons history ? Hint It ran from 1985-2000 in Portland.

Grant will be forgotten faster than a soft Ice cream cone on a hot July day.His segments were always politically correct.Non offensive to most viewers and not delivered without much thought to the resource.Do YOU want someone on TV telling everybody where to fish at what river level and using GPS waypoints ? That could be next.As long as Lure Jensen & Alumaweld contribute nothing to the well being of the Fisheries you can expect the fisheries to decline. With all Grant's heavy connections perhaps he will arise from the cutting room floor and produce his own show.We can only hope he has the energy.

Pete

SSteve, you ask easy ones! That would be the Northwest Sportfishing Report Show!

Grant brought all sorts of wonderful experiences to the tube. Much of it merely represents the culture that makes our corner of the United States unique. But as the House of Nuts/Cinnebon/Kinney Shoes/Walmart/Target world chokes the remnants of culture out of us most people will hardly recognize the significance of a third generation Oregonian catching their first winter steelhead or any number of other wonderful things Grant showed us. Thanks Grant. See you at Starbucks! (NOT!)

Pete your right twice.Your too quick.
Corporate America demands soo much of our energy that few have any left to fight the good fight. It takes a special kind of energy to sacrafice personal gain for the good of the public or a resource. If only some of our politicians could find some of the " right" energy.Hopefully someday I will regain some of that energy. For right now all I can offer you is a " OREGON TROUT STINKS " bumper sticker.E-mail me your address if you want one.they should be available late next week.SS
