Has anyone tried those Rogue bait spinners in the Columbia this year? Going out tomorrow, thought I would try one while waiting for the tide to change. Anyone who has tried please let me know how they worked or am I just kidding myself....

X,
they work but you may have to mess around with the hook placement to get your herring to spin correctly. You may also need to speed up just a tad.I have caught fish with this setup, but sometimes they prefer the bare herring so try one of each to start.Let the fish tell you what to use.
Good Luck.

I have only tried this rig on the mid columbia one day near longview, and we hooked two fish landing one. We hooked 'em up straight, no spin with a gold blade.

We tried 'em on Sat. and this morning without success -- but then nothing else was working either.
I had to move the blade about 6 or more inches above the herring in order for the herring to roll.
The 'straight' method mentioned above, which I assume means no roll on the herring, sounds very interesting.
I would seem like this spinner blade rig would be better to use when fishing with reduced visibility.

If memory serves (and that would be a fallible source), I believe the Rogue Spinners are intended to fish straight, without a roll. The attraction is s'posed to be the blade and fresh meat. Anyone have a package handy to check the directions on the back?

Arent we a gullable bunch..........a different way to fish comes out in an artical in the STS and we are all trying it.
OK, yeah I'm gonna try it too. :hoboy: If I recall the artical by Linde said that the bait should roll, but it would seem it would work either way. Good luck!

When those baits first started being used in the Rogue Bay, there was a lot of experimentation. Some swore by the spinning bait, others said it had to stay straight. If you look now, darn near every guide down there fishes them spinning. Through trial and error, that seems to be the consensus choice.
Interestingly, the system started on the Rogue Bay was preceeded by the "Firecracker Rig", on the Siletz and Alsea, I can't remember the guides names off the top of my head, seems like it was a father and son combo. It actually uses tubing instead of a set of beads, but the idea is the same
A tip if you thread your bait and place a treble on the end...instead of "hiding" the treble up inside the bait by pulling it up the vent, pull it out slightly, and bury one prong into the side of the fish near the tail. You can then adjust the bend of the bait by pulling on your slider.
