View Full Version : Sinker Party

Does anyone out there make thier own sinkers and jigs? There's a few guys I know who do. We are thinking about having a mass lead pouring party soon. It's been 5 years since the last one and the stocks are low. The problem is we don't have nearly enough lead or all of the molds we need.
So far the heavy end balls from 2lbs and up is covered and some of the jigmolds for bottom fish jigs. What is missing is the 6, 8, 10, 12 oz ball lead molds and some of the larger jigheads.
Anyone interested?
Thanking you in advance.

Pilar, I have all of the cannon ball molds from 1/4 oz. all the way up to 40 oz. I also have a mold for duck decoy weights. I will be out of the country from March 11th to April 5th but would be interested after that or send me an email at jhicke@geoengineers.com to discuss a loan of the molds.

Pilar,
I can chase the lead down, or at least some anyway. How much do you figure is needed?

Since it is a subject on lead, where is the best place to get lead for a good price? I normally get lead from metro metals which is a recycling place, but the problem is that the lead the get most of the time has so much crap in it you end up only with 2/3 of what you bought.
any suggestions appreciated.

Slow Roll, the last time I did this we went through 500lb for four fishers. This was a 5 year supply of cannon balls (8 oz to 64 oz) and small bottom fish jigs (1/4 to 4 oz jigs) for four boats.
If you can get more than that we could make ingots for next time. A bread pan full is about 35#. I have one ingot left and some s*****. My buddy has about 200# of scrap. We use both tire balance weights and soft lead. The tire weights have antimony and calcium. Both additives lower the melting point of pure lead by a hundred F or more.

I just made a few last night and it's not a easy  as making decoy sinkers. I would be willing to come and help and also talk to a friend that has molds to come or barrow his molds. I have maybe 100 # of lead. I can look for more. Please let me know  .

I'll come and I have some lead, I think I have 40-50lbs and can come up with more. I have a buddy with some 8-12oz molds. When and where?

Capin' Dan!, Bait Boy, Drifty and I are in.
Dan said he would be willing to invest in a mold or two for the project.
I strongly recomend good ventalation and perhaps a respirator.
I have a cast iron smelting pot that I can bring.
Ask Capin' Dan! about the Ling Killer. Perhaps we can make some of those too.
Pass the pot......
Hot Stuff, look out!

ok, after a little phone calling I have chased down two leads and am sniffing a few more.
If anyone wants to go in on a ton (yes I mean 2000 lbs  ) we can get it for .25 cents per pound.
If we need to get it in smaller quantities I have a lead for .35 cents per pound.
I will update as soon as I get the rest of the info.
Paul B.
P.S. if these are decent prices let me know, if not I will not purse it any more.

Lead party? Jeez we must be in that slack time between net free gator season and spring chinook. But wait! More smelt on the way in!
I've got a connection for cheap lead I can probably exploit. Anyone short some of the stuff let me know. I could also donate the use of my unlandcaped/can't screw it up back yard which has the big tent if the weather is bad

I have molds:
1,2,4,6oz pyramid
2,3,4,5,10oz bank
a small pot, a propane torch, and about 30 pounds of lead.
I'll have to think about the TON of lead!
I mainly need pyramid and bank sinkers for spring chinook plunking in the Columbia current -- about 10oz.

I might be interested in this party.
I have a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, pyramid mold, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 pear shaped mold. A lil mac 1/4 and 1/8 ounch jig head mold, and a downrigger mold with fin, cant remember if it is 8 or 10 pounds without looking. But it takes a chuck of hot lead to fill up

Well, .35 is the best I found for smaller amounts.
Pilar, let me know when and where and I will go pick up 100 lbs.
We used to pour 1/2 and 1/4 oz. jigs and egg sinkers every winter. Fishin' rivers is a good way to donate a lot of lead.

I have a respirator but I am not sure if it is rated for use with heavy metals. I can bring it if anyone wants to use it.

Thanks for the response. I am still scrounging for whatever lead we can find or get as a donation elsewhere. So buy what you need Paul but wait a week or two so we can tally up the scrounge.
This would be best planned a week or two in advance. I have a respirator but the cartridges are old, I need to get new ones.
Can we try to get together around the weekend of the 30th, March? Or suggest another date.
I believe we have enough molds and a covered outdoor place to do it. We use propane burners to melt.
The molds I have personally are cannon balls 2lb, 2.5lb, 3lb, 4lb and a jig set 1/2oz to 2oz for bottom fish jigs.
I have about 40# of lead in ingots.
And a burner and melt pot, face shield, respirator, drossing tools, scale and a covered ladle.
What do you think?

I'd be interested too. I've got some lead (maybe 30-40 lbs) and may be able to get a little more. Spring break is 3/23-3/31 so you might lose some people if they are traveling with the kids (I am).

The 30th or the 6th of April work for me but I am pretty flexible.
Well, if we get an assembly line going we should be ok. Sounds like everything that is needed is available. (we used to just use a coleman stove and a small pot so this is sounding better to me)
I'll kick in for propane and eats since all I'm gonna bring is lead.
Oh yeah, graemlins/idea.gif going to need to know what size hooks and other assorted wires to get for cannonballs and pyramids.
Guess we can get all that sorted out at a later date too. Just wanted to get the thought out there.

I'd be in for a little lead'n.
I have no molds that I know of, but may have a few after I clean out the garage of a departed relative. (that sounds bad doesn't it) But it looks as if you guys may have every size mold ever sold.
Hey Paul,
Can you hook me up with some of the lead your getting?
The thought of every getting another sack full of lead for Christmas is passing quickly.

I'd be up for going! What do we need for brass loops at the top? I can see if I can find a supply of them.

I would be happy to donate some lead if I could borrow someones mold to make larger jigheads for bottomfishing. I'm headed to Neah Bay May 1st and need to restock. I only I have one mold, 2,4,6 & 8 ounce cannonball, but I have access to a couple others. It looks like we'll have a nice selection amongest all of us.

I too might be interested in some sort of trade. I have 75lbs of lead in 5lb ingots at home. I don't have any molds. I can get about another 200lbs, but not until the end of March.

Pilar,
I'd be interested in participating, too. I don't have any molds, but presently have about 25# of lead...believe I can get some more before the set-date. Let me know what (brass loops, etc.) are needed and where to get them.

NorRivDave,
Not a problem, when we get this party scheduled I will go pick up some for both of us, let me know how much you want. You can just pay me back for it later. I won't even mark it up.
BTW, what did you do wrong to get a sack of lead for Xmas?

I have 50 pounds of lead and 4 oz diamond bar and 2,3,4 oz bullet jigheads molds. If I can't make the party, I would like to use your 2.5 and three pound molds.
