orange flatfish - then those spinners with the white dimpled spots on the blades- then wobblers (i think they were half brass/half chrome?)- then half nelsons and full nelsons- then rainbows-clamshells- then prawn spinners- then plug cut herring- then quickfish w/wraps- then herring again- Maybe that tells you how long I have fished for springers, only to catch my first last week. on a rainbow spinner. my own personal retro fad begins, im hooked on rainbow spinners now! ever since i was aboy these fads have come and gone....... t-spoons were a fad too, i almost forgot them! if i could only use one from now on- rainbow for me!

hack2ee,
Hey, I'm with you, the other day I anchored in several spots around St. Helens and figured if I just kept putting hardware into the water I was bound to tick off something bad enough to so they would get tangeled up with my sharp pointed things. Guess what, IT DIDN'T WORK. Anyway, CONGRATS on YOUR success

My dad and his pals used to fish the Coon Island stretch religiously in the years following WWII. Their favorite lure was a Brass #5 Blade (called a Clover Leaf)5 dark red glass beads and a red feathered treble hook. The interesting part of the tackle is that the spreader wire 'was' the leader, also. Those 'wild' salmon obviously weren't leader shy, as they inhaled spinners trolled on a #200lb. stainless wire.

* Bet that rig would do just as well, today!

They're not leader shy at all. I've got a friend that tried a couple leaders tied with 240# mono used for marlin. They not only caught a fish on it but they caught one fish on both Kwikfish at the same time.

I have to agree that the way to fish is the Rainbow spinner. I grew up in the hogline near the 50 dolphin fishing with my dad and grandfather. When I was about 6 years old my Grandfather taught me how to make spinners (I think this was to keep me amused in the boat) all he ever used was a rainbow spinner and he always caught fish. I spent many an hour in the hogline last year and every fish I caught was on a rainbow spinner. BTW one of the spinners I used I made 38 years ago.

HOGTIDE, I have a few of those spinners that I inheirited from my dad. I actually used one last year. (I didn't catch a fish.) Talk about some tough leader!
