I am a huge fan of shimano reels and i own several. just heard of this one called the scorpion. It is suppose to be a red currado and have some other things the currado doesnt have. Does anybody out there use one and do they work the same or better than the currado?? I want one!!

I've seen them online, just type in "japanese shimano reels" into any search engine and you should come up w/some info on them.

They are made for the Japanese fishing market. They do not sell them in the US. They are available through a few US tackle dealers that import them.

Sweet looking reels, be ready to shell out about 300 bucks for one.

There are few on eBay. They seem to be idential to Curados minus the color and the handle color.

The above link then takes you to http://www.profishing.net - who sells them.

It looks like they have them for $149

this link will take you directly to the Scorpian order page.

So what have you heard about these reels? From what I've just read they sound great.

The specs on this reel are very similar (number of BBs, wiffle spool, fully-adjustable external controls, etc.) to the Quantum PR600s, which are (in my opinion) the finest baitcasting reel available for about $150. They cast like a rocket and have a marvelous drag. The Quantums are widely available in the U.S. and are readily serviced by most repair stations. I've had five of them in continuous service now for over 2 years with no failures or service of any kind.

I am a big Chronarch fan.. the question I have is how do the scorpio compare to the chronarch?

Here is some dialogue on comparing the reels

I own one of them critters, and it's my favorite baitcaster. It's called a "Scorpion" (In fact, my model is called a "Metanium Scorpion" which makes me feel a bit like Hans Solo.) The Scorpion is a tricked-up version of a Chronarch (which is the model for the less expensive Curado so I can see how they can be confused).

So if you know the Chronarch, start with that in your mind and add the following:

1. A bunch more ball bearings (10 vs. 6?)
2. A magnesium wiffle spool that adds about 10-15' to a 70' cast using very light pencil lead or split shot and drift gear. This is its best feature.
3. A dark gray possibly magnesium housing (vs. the silver/ pearl-ish Chronarch) which shaves a little weight

NOTE: Magnesium parts mean this reel CANNOT be fished in salt water!

Other than that, it's identical to a Chronarch (I own one of them as well). Now I've not fished the Chronarch with wiffle spool but I imagine that would give you about 90% of the bang for a far smaller percentage of the cost.

So while I reach for this reel before any other when I'm going to drift fish, I'm not certain it's value-for-money. (And I bought mine in Singapore far more cheaply than you can get one in the US. I paid $190 for it in Sept 99 -- back in the good old days when a Chronarch was only $130 or so. Those days are over here, however.)

Bottom line: if I buy another (!!) reel, I'll buy a Chronarch > Metanium Scorpion
