Did the herring thing on Sunday with Uncle Bob and shaggy (9year old). what a blast! Herring of all sizes and coloration. Some soft and some firm.
Each got a nice brine with distilled water, salt, and ice. Firmed up real nice. Bite went flat with the outgoing tide.
If nothing else, these will work great in the ocean come June. Herring shortage? Not!!! Go catch your own.

I'm thinking about going Saturday, and I see that the tides are low at 8:45 a.m and high at 2:48. So, is the incoming a good tide to jig for herring? I haven't been down there before, so where's the put in, and any tips? Can I buy the jigs at Fisherman's Marine Supply?

I'm headed down there Saturday as well, Finner. I'll have two kids with me and hope to give them a thrill.
My understanding is you can buy the rigs at the marina on the Bay.
Good luck!

Yep, fish the incoming tide over near the green water tower. Fish right in front of the cement boat! Anchor up when it is not running hard.
On the hard incoming tide we just drifted along starting above the bouys. We drifted toward the cement boat in 18 to 43 ft of water.
Herring were on the bottom Sunday. Dropped to the bottom and then up 1 to 2 cranks. Then just a smooth up and down jig motion. Boom....1 to six fish on.

The marina had a lot of Sabiki fish skin jigs on Saturday and Fishermans had nothing of use last Friday.
The pure white worked best followed by the pearl then pink. We caught lots by the Coast Guard Station on incoming but had to fish the marina jetty sandbar and a little further up on the outgoing.
Just look at your fishfinder. If you don't see a bunch then move.
As far as jigging, a drop and slow retrieve or a drop and jig, crank, repeat.
Four, five, six at a time, the kids kept me busy preserving them for bait.

You can get the Sibiki Jigs, at the Walmart in Newport.
Herring had closed mouths today. Very slow.

C & E, did you actually catch a fish? And did Spencer catch more than you again? I can tell that he is going to have fish blood in his vains. Sorta like u, Right. If herring are easy to catch I might have a shot at it with my zebco.

Do you have to freeze them before you vacuum pack them? I'm thinking I'll need to place them on the trays and throw them in the freezer for a bit before I try vacuum packing them..

I got there a little late for the high tide bite down by the green tank. The east wind was a pit, the wind blew you faster than the outgoing tide, so you had trouble keeping your line vertical, and it was tough anchoring up.
By 3 pm, I had 3 lonely herring swimming around in my bucket, and decided to turn them loose on the theory that tortured bait probably doesn't catch big fish.
I hung around until low tide, and then the bite really turned on. I was anchored up right inside the entrance to the boat basin, and the herring were biting as fast as you could get the rig in the water, five and six at a time, no problem getting my 25 lbs in about 1/2 hour.
Used a white sabiki rig with green glow beads and an Australian hand caster (hand line), which really increased my efficiency, I could get them in, and off my hooks and be back in the water in about 30 seconds.

CptCatchum, we did not do that well. After we moved we picked up a few more but only ended up with 38 of them. We left about 2:30, sounds like we should have stayed until low tide. Sounds like PirkFan really got into them. Anyway it was good to see you again, will see you on the Nehalem for sure. CAgey

How much longer do the herring stay in the bay? Do they go up any futher up the bay?
