You 'can' do it, but it is usually a pain. Throw out a couple of buckets or sea anchors to slow you down. A 2 stroke out board will usually 'load up' if you do this. An inboard will 'rumble' you to death.

People troll with everything! Herring is the favorite early in the season, especially in the lower parts of the channel and the Columbia. Some folks love to troll prawns, especially in the middle and upper reaches of the Willamette. Spinners work well also, especially when the water warms up. The warmer the water...the more fish hit the spinner!!!?

But, personally, I would go crazy trolling with the big motor. Read the tide book.Find an inside corner, 15 feet of water and dump your favorite k-14 kwikfish over board. Good Luck

jtl85, i have a 40 hp on my sixteen footer and i added a happy troller to it. It doe's a really good job and is much cheaper than a kicker. They are easy to install and not overly expensive.

It is true that a trolling plate will slow you down enough to troll with your bigger motor. use to do that for trout all the time. You will use a little more fuel but it's worth it. The main thins is that you get on the water and fish. Don't let that stop you. like Hogtied says, find a spot where other p[eople are anchoring in 15 to 20' of water and toss in those plugs. You might want to soak them with some scents first though. Mainly to eliminate your scent from the lure.
Patience is all that is left and you will have to wait just like the rest of us. Good luck.

I have a trolling plate on my 50 hp and I hate it.
No control in the wind or a med to fast current.
I hae now gone to the buckets and i like that a lot better.

We dont have a trolling motor on our boat yet, so for this spring would it be possible to troll upstream with the
big motor and still be going slow enough for the fish? Also wondering if herring are basically the only thing that people troll
? Can you troll Kwickfish or are they mostly just for anchoring? Thanks
