My brother was up from California yesterday, and didn't want to drive very far from my parents house in Eugene to fish, so I took him to E.E. Wilson Pond near Corvallis, because they put the big brood trout in it. I got skunked. It's been a while since that's happened. He hooked one, but lost it. Here's how he lost it. This guy fishing on the west bank had his line out so far that he might as well have been fishing on the east bank with a much shorter cast. His line severely cut into the fishing area of everyone on the south bank. You just couldn't cast out very far without fouling with his line. My brother hooked his fish, and he's playing it for a few minutes. Then the guy with his line way out in everybody's way announces that he has a fish on, and sure enough he does. My brother then loses his fish. The line breaks, because not only does he have a large brood trout on, but it fouled with the other guy's line, and he's reeling against my brother, who has to fight both the fish and the other guy's reeling. So this guy plays "his" fish, and his rod is thumping, and it's stripping line out, and my brother, who doesn't realize this guy has his fish, comes over to watch after his line breaks. Eventually, the fish comes loose, and this guy reels in my brother's spinner. I know it was his because it's one I made, and you can't buy one like it. So this guy stands there scratching his head, wondering how that happened, and my brother goes over and reclaims his spinner. The moral of the story?

YOU DON'T NEED TO CAST ALL THE WAY OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE WHERE EVERYONE ELSE IS TRYING TO FISH! IT'S A BAD IDEA!

Maybe you should use that glass-encrusted line the Chinese kite fighters employ.
Why is it that many think that the best water is on the other side, be it river or small pond? I've learned to work water from the closest on out. No sense spooking any fish holding close by bringing the first fish caught thru "virgin" water.
