View Full Version : Anybody dip the lewis today?
Was wondering if anyone went to the lewis today? The last 2 times up there have not been very productive. Lot's of birds and sea lions but the fish were not near the bank.

I also hit the Cowlitz at Gerhart Park. This was the first time I caught a smelt dipping.... right next to a gentleman and family that said they hadn't dipped since 1985... so, it must have been a good day... the smelt were close enough to the banks where you could net them with an 8' pole... I was surprised how you could catch 10 to 20 fish with a single dip, and that there are no indicators on top of the water of the smelt below... We watched a sea lion repeatedly diving in the middle of the river, but the birds weren't doing much.. either flying around of sitting in the water... I caught my smelt in the afternoon, on a falling tide, and the water was brown and rising... so are there any other indicators, other than the presense of sea lion/sea gulls to indicate that the smelt are running in the area, or is it just a dumb luck ?? This was a fun day... now I'd like to try my hand at jigging for herring to catch some springers.... have a great day !!

Took the family up to the Lewis saturday night. Dipped from 530-730pm and came home with about 15#. Pretty slow overall, but it really picked up (relatively speaking) after dark.
