View Full Version : speedometer pick up hole

i have a yamaha 115 with the pick up hole in the lower unit and its got wood stuck in it from a few trips ago on the columbia. can i drill it out?? how far can i drill before i might drill too far into the lower case and maybe do some damage. sound a little trivel but i paid goo money for my tach and speedometer, both yamaha parts!!...john

I'd try a needle and tweezers first. Just take your time. If it's really plugged tight use a drill bit but not in the drill. Use your fingers to spin it or maybe a pair of pliars to twist it. Much less likely to damage something if you just take your time.

I'd try a very small drill. Drill the center out and then you can probably take a small pick and take it out in pieces.

They make left handed drill bits that have the flutes in the reverse direction for extraction i.e. removing broken bolts etc. If your going to keep the unit for a while there will be more wood again so it may be worth the investment.

:blush: OOps this won't work, DAH! never mind, only works with broken screws and bolts.

:wink: STG is right, use a drill without the drill motor. If you have to use a motor use a electric screwdriver with a drill bit instead of the driver bit. Slower and better control.
