I know this topic has been brought up before, I just can't find it. What is the bait scent of choice
While running kwickies for springers on the Columbia?

90% of the time Sardines are the go to. I had good luck last year with a "naked" K15 and Anise oil. We also had one day that we smoked them up by Bonnie with Herring wrapped.

Dumb Question, but how about a smelt bait wrap? I have a ton of fresh quick frozen from this years dippings? I know they tend to be a bit mushy, but would they work as a Kwikfish wrap? They could always be scented with sardine or herring oil?

Where would one find the best "fresh frozen" sardines?

Fin uses Preparation H on all his plugs....including his kwikfish too! Hee hee. Couldn't resist.

2 part question, Has anybody ever tried fastening your herring/sardine wrap on a k-fish using small rubber bands? Just wondering if it would work , maybe the r-bands would create water drag and cause the K-fish to not work properly. Good question on the sardine, curious if sardine scent added to the k-fish is as effective as using a bait wrap.

I would think the rubber bands would work just fine as long as they were tight enough. I don't think they would cause anymore drag than the stretchy thread you use to tie the fillet on with, might be worth experimenting with to find out. As far as the sardine scent, I have used the sardine butter before and did not have very good results with it so I feel that the real thing is best whenever possible.

Thanks Artwo,
Thought that it would be faster and possibly neater using small thin r-bands. I will let you know how they work. I hope that sardines are not going to be hard to come by this year.

The last few years there has been a commerical fishery for some large very oily sardenes in Astoria. I buy a years worth at once and get a good price. If you just want a few dozen you might try Paul behind the minimarket in Warrington, Sturgeon Pauls in the phone book.
I heard about this guy who was using prep H on a K-13 got confused and ... well you can guess the rest of the story ... graemlins/1zhelp.gif

I use orthodontic elastics that my daughter has left over from her braces. they are small egnough to hold a wrap but the ********* can tear them off pretty easily.

I always use Sardines. They are the stinkiest and have a high oil content that can put out a "Trail" for the nooks to find your plug. I also heard of guys using Tuna belly. Any other fish have high oil content? Ive seen some weird looking fish at Asian specialy stores and at Food 4 Less on 82/Powell.

Prune Juice also works to kill the acid scent on your hands.

Jeep: First of all, Welcome -- I see this is your first post. Yes, smelt will catch springers when wrapped on Kwikies or Flaties. (Don't tell anyone else though). I call it turning smelt into salmon.
