Is anyone else out there wishing they could fish in the Ocean now? The bend can be your friend out on the Saltchuck.

With some help from all of you I would like to organize some kind of group for fishing in the Ocean this spring and summer. Threemuch described an E-mail tree he used in N. California to me on our last fishon adventure. This was a group of diehard salt water fishers who stayed tuned through E-mail.

What I want to establish is a group of people who meet some or all of the following points ...

1) Love to fish in the Ocean as crew or Captain.
2) Willing to go on short notice as weather permits trips out to sea. Notice can be as short as 24hrs.
3) Have equipment for Deep Sea fishing, boats, tackle, dive gear, crab or shrimp pots ....
4) Safety conscious and willing to work with other boats as a group.
5) Experienced fishers willing to teach and mentor newbies.
6) Newbies willing to learn.
7) Above all must be flexible and adaptable. The Ocean is in charge here on this coast.

So if we could establish such a group all would benefit. Guys with boats could find experienced crew to fish and help with expenses and handling the boat and gear. Guys willing to crew could get out on the big days (Halibut, Tuna, Salmon) even without their own boat.

Above all we could all learn to be safe and successful on the Ocean. This group could gather in wolfpacks and pillage offshore reefs, crab, shrimp, Salmon. There is some safety in numbers after all. Also consider the knowledge about reef locations, gear, boat setup and maintenance that could be shared.

Just think, a Saltwater Parish for the church of the bent rod.

Can I get an Amen?

Kurt, tell us more about how your email list worked down in the land of fruits and nuts.

All I know about the admin part is that I want to get these crazy ocean fishin mofos together.

So far the list includes
Wiser?
NorRivDave
Threemuch
Sturg
Swampy
BaitBoy

No reply from the following but They are already there

Mr. Fisherman
Puffin
Wak'm & Stak'm
RJ
Salmonator
Krystalflash
*********

For those of you considering this, don't be intimidated. There is a wealth of experience to be shared. Most of the fishers I know who do Big Blue are more than happy to share. With a little work any good boat can be made seaworthy and safe. We can make the initiation trips easy enough for novice Ocean fishers.

That's the point of this whole deal .. to make the treasures of the Ocean available to more people. And incidently to infect more of you Ifishers with saltwater fever.

Anyone else have an idea on how to make this happen?

See you in church.

Pretty simple really. It's just an email list server, similar to a BBS. The difference is that you get every post as an email. When you reply to any email, that goes to the rest of the list as well. It's much lower maintenance than a BBS.

I have participated in a couple list servers like this, and I like the "no rules" approach. Less hurt feelings. Any topic is fair game, just ignore the people you don't want to respond to.

I just started a group called Pacific NW Saltwater Fishing on Yahoo!

Anyone interested in joining, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PacNWsalt/

I am really interested in fishing Big Blue but have never had the funds or opporitunity to get out there. I have no Idea what to expect from this so I guess I would be one of the Newbies you need. What kind of gear would be needed, would a sturgy boat rod do the trick or do I need something a little heavier? Also I might have access to a cabin in Ocean Park where some of you could pitch a tent and store your boat for the weekend, I would need a little more than a days notice to be sure that the property is open. Its like a family time share so I have to get permission and arrange everything a few days before. Anyways, if any of you want a newbie ready to learn on your boat, I am your guy.

Thanks, Ben

I would be interested. I have all the gear for ocean salmon, bottom fishing and halibut. My 19.5 foot boat only ventures into the big blue on calm days. My family has a place in Tillamook and would be more than willing to assist in ventures out of that area. I can captain salmon/bottom fishing days near shore and can supply gear and a good set of knowledge for the long ocean trips.

Pilar:

Good idea! I'd be interested in joining up. There are a lot of days when the ocean is in good shape to fish, but there aren't many people going out. It would be great to have a couple of other boats around for safety and camaraderie.

I'm into ocean salmon, crabbing, bottom fishing, clamming. Tuna is fun. I'd like to explore some new bottom fishing spots out of Tillamook Bay and north up towards Short Sands.

I've fished the ocean for over 20 years and am familiar with the most of the bays and bars: Yaquina Bay, Depot Bay, Tillamook, Nehalem and the Columbia. I like going out of the Nehalem or Tillamook bay. It's a short trip out and you can get back in quickly if the weather changes.

I've got most of the gear including boat, charts, crab pots and tackle.

I'm self employed and can often go on short notice.

Keep me posted. Lets hook up.

Put my email on the list. kme1892808@aol.com I would like the opportunity to meet a few old "salty dogs" and do some fishing. Safety is my biggest concern, and I have been know to play it safe and cancel trips. I have an older 24' Fiberform that I have only used for salmon during July and August, but would like to tag along with a couple fishers to learn a few things about Halibut and Tuna. So I have a boat, but not the experience. Don't know much about the gear required, but would imagine a 320 spooled with 250 yards of tuff line would work. I would definately need an experienced guide boat to follow, before venturing way out into the Ocean.

Whoo hoo! Look at all the salty dogs on IFISH!

You guys rock, the fish are going to get wacked and stacked.

Try to sign up on Kurts new email server, see the previous post by Threemuch.

We must meet soon and plan some group gathering.

Pilar, You got me all giddy and anxious here, if I were on that new game show "the chair", I'd be reaching the red line.... I have had my boat out in the ocean just a few times, never very far out, but each time I had to give a hoot and hollar while crossing the bar!! What a great feeling to have all that freedom, and vast resource attainable. I dream of being more experienced with the whole program.

So, I guess I am saying that I have a boat, 21' starcraft. I've had her on a 60 mile round trip in the san juans. Some gear for the fishing, crab pots, and above average flexability at work for the right event, and definantly the desire to learn. Plus, I really like the safety in numbers aspect.

Wow, okay, starting to calm down here. Better get me on the list. We have a house at Neakahnie (sp), so TBay is a great spot for us.

I'll sign up Pilar. Have the gear, halibut/salmon/bottomfish experience and the sea legs. Not the boat unfortunately. I'm a good deck hand and excellent w/ the net/gaff. More than willing to pay for gas, bait, etc. Very dedicated to all day trips. Getting much better w/ a fillet knife.

Pilar, I take delivery on the new 24' SeaSport Explorer in a couple of weeks and am priming for the big blue. Radar, plotter, fish finder, 120 gal of fuel.... this boat is loaded for bear. I'm hoping to meet up with you and get my bearings again. I fished commercial in SE Alaska many years ago and am now able to get out in the ocean in the manner I promised myself I would do (we hung our a$$es out in the wind in the early 70's). I'm doing it the right way now. I plan for moorage at Astoria and I've got the trailer to hit the Sound and ports south (thinking of the Chicken Ranch and the Rockpile). Put me on the list, I'm almost ready.

Way  John. I signed up. Have the necessary gear. Difficult to get my boat down to Astoria on short notice. Stays in the water year-round in St. Helens as you know. 26' X10' is just to big for me to trailer around. I 'm an excellent first mate though. A group get together sounds cool.

Maybe someone should post a basic gear list so folks could start preparing.

So Kurt, we just have to check our email for info and updates ?

Wow Pilar, Great idea!

I live in WA, but would love to come down for a trip or two. I have a 19 foot sled, quite trick that handles the big blue very well. Sled's built like a whaler(glass-foam core-glass) unsinkable with windshield (necessity for the blue), kicker, VHF, GPS, Lowrance X70 and pretty big tanks. I've had a lot of experience on the blue and realize company is always a nice thing when you are way out in the middle of no where. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Great idea Pilar! Last fall we heard about the Tuna out of Coosbay, so we loaded the tuna gear up and went out 20 miles by our selves. When we got to the point of fishing there were a few other boats that had hooked up together, but didn't really communicate to much as team. My buddy and I were talking that very same idea, and that it would be nice to have a group of boats go for the safety factor as well as working the schools of tuna. We did catch a few tuna working along a commercial fisherman who haled us to run his port side to work a school of tuna. That was cool helping him out!

I know we would get out a little more often if we had a group to share ideas and have the safety of numbers!

My buddy has 23ft Striper cuddy hard top 70gal fuel, gps, charts, tuna out riggers all kinds of deep sea gear (his dad use to be a commercial fisherman) pretty knowledgeable on rigging. Sign us up!

I am on the list! I have been as far as 25 miles off the Columbia bar but never out of Newport. I have a 19' deeper v cudy and am ready for the more favorable ocean days and willing to team fish. I like the saftey in numbers thing. Doing it smart is a good. I carry 35 gallons in tank and can carry more in cans if needed. I started gooing out in the big blue last year more to avoid the combat fishing and realized how much I enjoyed it out there. Also I can be avalible weekdays more often than not.

I'd be interested. I've got a cabin at Seaview Wa that could be used and I meet most of the other criteria. My 19 1/2' Willie Predator is a little small for across bar but usually fine for inside. Hi,
Would love to join the group. I am pretty experienced at fishing all types of fish. Although I haven't done much fishing outside the bar, I have fished buoy 10 and the usual springer and sturgeon fishing in the Columbia. I have done lots of fishing on the California coast. I think it is a pretty cool idea to find a group of hardcore fishing buddies. The whole deal is finding a group of cool people that aren't **** . I can't stand people who think that they own the river and are inconsiderate.

John boy,

Ive got the experience on the blue and the drive to learn and teach. I've got most of the gear req'd except for the boat. and I could use a few more crab pots. Experienced skipper and first mate. More notice would be peachy but I can usually make a trip on a day or 2 notice.

I gotta catch me a TUNA this year. I'm having dreams about 60 degree water. I love to go catch but I could care less for the meat I go for the joy of facing the ocean and that anticipation of Just what in the heck kind of fish I am bringing up from the briny deep. Its all about being there and doing that.

I'd like to beat the 78Lb hali just to say I've done it(without going to AK).

Dreaming of blue water,

Yes, sign me up. I've fished small boats on the ocean all my life, mostly in Southern California. The sea here is much more dangerous, so I only venture out on perfect days. I've got a 15 foot Bayrunner with GPS, VHF, handheld VHF, kicker. It's a good sea boat (basically a square-stern dory) for its size, but clearly is pretty limited. I live part-time in Oceanside (near Tillamook) so short notice is not a problem.

I do get out for the ocean coho, and even whacked a few tuna a few years back when they were close in.

I would love to join others for tuna and halibut. I have plenty of tuna gear and tuna experience from my San Diego days. Great idea Pilar.

I'd definately like to join in too. I am definately a newbie (been out of Tillamook twice for coho), but I'm addicted and I can find the sea legs. Hi everybody and thanks for the response to this thread.

We have so far managed to plan a herring party in Newport on one weekend and then this last weekend we went for the Black Rockfish at 3 Arch.

Bringing it back to the top for anyone who missed it. Also I need to make an announcement. A new Forum is being created by our web guru so we can all be Salty Dogs. Read this thread and you'll get the idea behind it.

I think maybe we could still use the E-mail list to hook up crews and boats.

Thanks and fish on!

Count us in! My friend and I have been dreaming of something like this for years. We have a ton of experience between us. My friend currently has a 2001 25' bayliner trophy. We have gone out as far as 75 miles one way (it of course has to be very flat and predicted to stay that way)for tuna and always limit on halibut (I caught a 80+ lb last year). We trailer his boat from puget sound to Mexico. We would love to hook up with other hard core blue water fishermen. In the last 3 years I have only seen one other non commerical/charter boat while tuna fishing. We have had some 25-30 tuna days and no one around but us (not even charter or commerical boat in sight). I have a very flexible schedule and lots of gear. My buddy with the awesome boat is much more limited and must plan months in advance for his days off. This often causes a problem due to the weather. We can not go 30-75 miles out in even medium bad weather as you have to run to slow and it takes forever. We have gotten pretty good in short term prediction of weather and currents by checking bouys, sattelites, coast guard reports, tides, etc... All are very important for long range trips. To the person with the GTI 320. The average depth at the chicken ranch for halibut is about 600'. With much of a drift or wind you may need at least 300-400 yards of tuff line to compensate for line angle and a running fish. Sorry I am writing such a book, I am just so excited. We fish year round but can not wait each year for off shore, halibut, tuna, salmon and bottom fishing. There is so much to see that a land lubber could never even imagine. On one trip last year we found ourselves in a pod of about 50 small whales. Saw a ton of dolphins. Caught 17 albacore tuna and stopped to catch and release about 20+ blue sharks on the way back. What an awesome day. Currently it just kills me to be stuck home when the ocean is flat and the fish are biting (and my friend can not fish). Maybe we can buddy boat when my friend can go and maybe I can mate and share expenses on other nice days. We would love to share info and learn from others. I am signing off to add my name to the e-mail list. Hope to meet you all later. Lets get together and hammer some fish!

I sure would like to join in. I have never fished for Halibut and would welcome someone on board that knows how and where. I have a 2001 24 foot Duckworth with 80 gallons of fuel, GPS, VHF,CB Crab Pots. I might have to rethink my tackle selection depending on the depth of the salt. I have fished in the ocean since 1973, so I have a clue about crossing the bar and ocean conditions.
