 Chris, thanks for the info too. I live in Dundee and have heard about the back way to the Trask and Wilson. Now I know how to get there. The only place in Carlton I know is J. Mcdonald's wine tasting room. Go figure...

miami82,
You can get "Fishing in Oregon" book, which has a section on the Wilson River. It describes a couple of dozen holes for different species and runs. I usually check out all the pullouts along the Wilson and see if the spot looks 'fishy'. I fished it three times in the last two weeks, but been skunked each time.

On the Wilson, I have good luck fishing between mile posts 15-21. Lots of good holes.

Be careful thinking this is a short cut. Although it may feel like it when you are enjoying your trip do not depend on it.
for starters it is 20+ miles from Carlton to the bottom of Ginger creek. (winding roads) 30 minutes min. Then it is a 15+ mile gravel road from Ginger creek to the bottom of the East Fork. East Fork to Tillamook 17 miles. These figure are on the shy side. You are looking at almost 2 hours to get down to Tillamook. Without 4 wheel drifting the car/truck on the gravel roads that is.
Also, in the winter these roads can be a mess and are muddy, and the roads can slide at any time. there is a nasty one at the bottom of steam pot (on EF road) and it slides yearly. You may get to within 5 miles of SF Trask and have to turn around. There are many ways around it but none of them is a short cut, more like a long cut. Also, the snow up on top gets crusty and impassible when the snow level drops.
I have helped so many lost souls out of the woods that have gotten lost it isn't funny. graemlins/1zhelp.gif
don't get me wrong, it is a nice drive. I know quite a bit about the country up there, but hardly a short cut for anybody. I'll bet (literally) and I know it to be true, if I left Carlton the same time you did and just took 6. I would be in Tillamook before ya catching 40
