Hello....

Has anyone out there used Downriggers for Spring Chinook either in the Willamette or Columbia??

I know that it's really not all THAT necessary to do this, but it sure is fun fighting a Springer (or any fish for that matter) without a 6-8 ounce Cannonball hangin' around.

Let me know,

Scott

scott, I have in years past used my downriggers at Drano lake ,I'd wait towards the last 2 weeks in the season, when the crowdes were not so bad and the Springers were scattered around the lake. I do well on herring, and wrapped flatfish. Mostly I use my riggers at Drano, in Aug.and Sept. for summer steelhead and fall chinook. You might check out my new website( it's almost done )at www.riversnw.com....maybe (http://www.riversnw.com....maybe) a show idea? .let me know if I can help....... .....p.s. it's cool fighting big fish on 10'6" loomis steelhead rods off downriggers ....no weight, just you and the fish.......Bob...

Hey Scott
I was wondering about that same thing. Its always a kick to have nothing but fish pullin your line. The black box might even help a little when all else fails. I 'll give it a try if only to see the comments & looks I get. graemlins/icon_argue.gif

Scrod,

Yeah, I figure you need to have Room for downriggers, especially if there are allot of fisherman in a particular area. I think they would be effective in Open Water Areas such as the Mouth of the Willamette, or Portland Harbor areas...on up into the Milwaukie Stretch...even the Columbia when the current isn't ripping.

Be very careful using downriggers in rivers. Here is a "what if." What if the motor fails while trolling along. The current will keep you moving, and one of the weights might hang up on the bottom. The boat will turn around, putting the stern upriver. If you have a long boom on the downrigger, the torsion could pull the boat under in a few seconds. Keep a pair of snips handy!
