At least 40. I like the fixed but chain break away rocker anchor. Some will say only 25, but some days that won't hold you and turns your day into much work, perhaps out of the fishing and also perhaps drills for all those around or below you. Minimum 300 foot of anchor rope with plastic coated chain link between the anchor and rope. Anchor puller of your choice. I prefer the ball type.

Agreed, Rick. The anchor I use is the rocking chair but homemade and about 50#. The shank and cross bar are 1 x 2 box tubing and the rockers are 1/4 x 2 flatbar. I fill the shank with lead to make it tip over and stick. You need 10' of 1" chain with a breakaway on the shank. Weld the chain to the crossbar and wire it to the ring at the top of the shank with fence wire or Tie wraps.

300' is a good length of line. I use two lines, one is 100' for easy and shallow hookups. The other is 400' (was 500') and could be longer. This is almost enough for the heavy currents in the Columbia near Bonneville in the spring runoff. The Coast Guard recommends 500 to 700 ft for Bonneville. Where the heck would you store all that line?

If you use a ball, buy the A-4, 36" diameter. You'll never get that one stuck at Bonneville in the heavy current. It cracks me up when I see the itty bitty balls some guys have. (on their anchor rigs!) You have to wonder how good a 1' diameter ball works for puling an anchor.

Question for you ******, Why plastic coated chain?

Hey, have to agree with ****** on this. I use exactly the same system with 350' of rope. The breakaway chain rig works great. Like ****** said, make sure you get
a plastic coated chain. My first chain wasnt coated and I got some bad rust damage on my bow, not to mention you'll save some scratches and gouges on your bow too (although there are probably more functional reasons). It's
not cheap for this type of anchor set up but it's worth every penny.

******, why won't the 35# pyramid anchors work in the Columbia. I have one and hope to fish in 4.0 but really don't want to buy a third anchor. I have a smaller one for the Wilamette with chain and ball but would it work in the Columbia too? I don't have a problem with using the 300' of rope just don't want to buy yet another anchor.Should I use th pyramid or the folding chain claw anchor for 4.0?
It's all new to me out there.
You gotta teach me to find all your graphics and cartoons. They are great. I anticipate you just cut and paste them into your postings.

Plastic is more for "damage" control than anything else. The coating has held up fine and I did not think it would. Not as cold or slippery on the hands either. Saved much wear and tear on the boat bringing the anchor onto the bow or into the back of the boat.

Snapshot, you might be fine with your pyramid or smaller anchor if you are staying down below and not up at Bonneville.

Snap; I doubt that pyramid would hold my 19' boat in the lower river because it would slip in the sand. Nothing worse than anchor angst all day when other boats are busy catching. Toss some more money in the pit. Follow the advice above to the letter for best results.
The first good anchor I bought years ago was lost on it's first set when it got stuck and the slightly flawed rope broke when pulling it. At least I saved the puller ball. My 45$ lesson on good rope. I always get A's in the school of hard knocks.

I was wondering what is the weight/size of your anchor you use in the Columbia? And you perfer the fixed or collapsible sytle rocking chair anchor? I have a 19' aluminum boat and need a new anchor. Thanks!
